Happy Friday West Potomac,

 

It’s a great day to be a Wolverine!  Our teachers and staff have returned to full time work at the building this week and the energy and the buzz of West Potomac has returned.  We are excited about the transition to the return to school and look forward to our in-person students returning beginning next week.  As a reminder, the return to school staggered schedule is as follows:

 

In-person 9th and 12th grade students with last names beginning with A-K will return on Tuesday March 2nd.

In-Person 9th and 12 grade students with last names beginning with L-Z will return on Thursday March 4th

In-person 10th and 11th grade students with last names beginning with A-K will return on Tuesday March 9th.

In-person 10th and 11th grade students with last names beginning with L-Z will return on Thursday March 11th.

 

All in-person students only attend school 2 days per week based on their alpha last name.  A-K students attend on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.  L-Z students attend on Thursdays and Fridays.

 

The FCPS school calendar has a 2-hour early release on this Friday March 5th.  The bell schedule will be as follows:

Guest Speaker: Brady Dalton Richards – Making his Broadway debut in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child as Scorpius Hyperion Malfoy. “Raised smack in the center of Maryland, encouraged by family and Howard County arts programs toward creative-personing. His craft furthered and fine-tuned at Syracuse University’s School of Drama, earning his BFA in Acting. While there, he was able to sample living in both NYC and LA, work in a professional theatre company, devise and perform original work, make movies, run a radio show, and marinate in a primordial ooze of developing artists on a college campus.”

WPHS Library Update - Overdue Books:  The library is still attempting to collect overdue library books. Students were sent overdue notices to their FCPSSCHOOLS.net email on Thursday, 2/25/21. Please check with your student to see if they have any overdue materials. For students remaining virtual, there will be a bin outside of the main entrance on every Monday from 8:30-2:30. For students returning to in-person learning, there will be a bin outside of the library every day. If you have books from another FCPS school, you may return them to West Po. World Language Credit Exam - Each year FCPS offers the World Language Credit Exam that assesses proficiency in a variety of languages.  Students who take the exam may earn up to three pass or fail credits in the language.  The Fall 2020 assessment was postponed to this Spring.  Please visit this link (scroll down to Spring 2021) to learn more.  If you would like your child to participate please contact your child school counselor.  The deadline to contact your counselor and enroll is tonight, February 28th. 

 

2021 FCPS Summer Learning Information:  Many students participate in summer learning opportunities to advance academically, to sharpen their skills, or to learn something new. This summer, FCPS will offer a variety of opportunities including the Online Campus. Information regarding additional opportunities will be announced on the FCPS Summer Learning webpage as they become available.

Online Campus:   Registration: Monday, February 8-Friday, June 11.  Examples of courses:  Honors Geometry, Algebra 2 Head Start, CTE, EPF, English 10, English 12, Spanish and others.

Second Quarter Honor Roll:  We will be celebrating our Rising Stars, All-A, and All A/B honor roll students for the 2nd quarter. Like First Quarter, we will hold raffles of $5 gift cards for each group. We are asking for donations towards purchasing the gift cards so we will have as many as possible to increase everyone's chance of winning something. We are asking for monetary donations instead of actual cards this time to minimize contact with the cards and each other.  Please consider donating through our PTSA Member Hub Store https://westpotomacptsa.memberhub.store/store - all donations will be used for the 2nd quarter gift card raffles to be held later in March. College Planning Night for Juniors and Parents, Class of 2022 - March 10, 6:30-8:00 p.m. Session will be held virtually with panel of college admissions representatives presenting information on the college admissions review process, college search process-finding the right fit, Application sources: Common Application and Coalition Application, SAT/ACT tests, community college option and financial aid/scholarships. Need Flexibility? SELF-DIRECTED ONLINE CLASSES AVAILABLE

The test prep program is offering self-directed online test prep created by Applerouth. This is an excellent course that covers all the content offered through the usual group class as well as tips and strategies for the official tests. Mock test results provide a solid study guide. Applerouth tutors are available to assist self-directed students with any questions during the course. One mock test is included in the self-directed class. Class licenses expire 7/31/21.
