Vicki for newsletter

Congratulations to Dr. Vicki Duling, Assistant Principal

Vicki Duling is retiring after completing 25 years in FCPS! Her last day at Laurel Hill ES will be March 19th! We have attached a short bio that will be published in the FCPS retirement program.

As an experienced teacher in Georgia and Japan, Vicki Duling joined FCPS as a classroom teacher at Mark Twain MS and Kings Glen ES.  After four years as a reading specialist, she served as an assistant principal at three schools. As principal, she led Franklin Sherman ES through significant instructional changes and a full renovation.  Vicki finished her 25 year career at Laurel Hill Elementary School where she continued to influence students, parents and teachers daily.

We wish her all the best as she spends more time with her husband, her aging parents, her new grandchild, and cheering for the Washington Nationals!

Preparing to Return to School----Procedures, Times and Details

Please note the following details regarding some new procedures, reminders, and other details of importance for parents!

  • ALL students returning to school in person are REQUIRED have a completed health form signed and turned into the school office prior to their first day returning to school.  The link is here for your convenience:

    https://www.fcps.edu/sites/default/files/media/forms/HealthScreeningCommitment.pdf

  • All parents are able to call the office and make an appointment to drop off medications at any time prior to their child returning to the school building. Please call first for the appointment to ensure someone is available to assist you.

  • The school office is open from 9:15AM-12:15PM on Mondays and from 9:15 AM-4:30PM Tuesday-Friday. School doors open for student arrival at 9:25AM with the beginning of the school day now starting at 9:45 AM. There is no student drop off before 9:25AM each day as there is no supervision and student safety is our first priority always.  Our new official school hours are 9:45 AM to 4:15 PM.
  • Student breakfast and lunch will be provided free to all students for the rest of the year.  If your child choses to eat the provided breakfast or lunch, the menu will be at the discretion of the cafeteria manager and no specific menu will be provided for the week.  There will be a vegetarian option each day. You cannot send in breakfast from home, so unless your student is eating the school breakfast, your child needs to eat breakfast at home before coming to school.
  • Many teachers will be planning a snack time during the day.  Please refer to their specific guidelines regarding items and times of the day.
  • Water fountains throughout the school are taped up and turned off.  Your child is encouraged to bring a LEAKPROOF water bottle daily.  The students will keep their water bottles at their desks throughout the day.
  • Masks are required all day except when eating and the occasional mask break outside.  Please consider keeping an extra mask in your child's backpack.
  • Arrival and Dismissal Details:  Please understand that parents are not allowed to "come into the school building" due to the COVID and mitigation strategies.  Dismissal procedures include adult supervised arrival from Kiss and Ride, buses and walkers with all 1st-6th grade students entering via Door 1 and dismissing via Door 1 as well.  All grade 1-6 students will watch for their K & R number or bus number from their classroom and travel to their appropriate location.
  • Thank you in advance for your patience as kiss and ride dismissal will take a bit longer the first few days!

Library Curbside

Students can borrow print books from the LHES library by placing books on hold in Destiny Discover, the library catalog, and picking them up on the following days:

K-3 Curbside Pickup will be scheduled on Monday, March 15th, April 12th, April 26th, May 10th, May 24th from 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm.

4-6 grade Curbside Pickup will be scheduled on Monday. March 22nd, April 05th, April 19th, May 03rd, May 17th. From 4:00 pm-5:00 pm.

You pick the books! – Students login to the library catalog (Destiny Discover) and place holds on up to 2 (K-2) and 5 (3-6) specific print book titles. Please see additional videos and instructions in your child’s Library google classroom or Library site.

Steps to take to hold a book and know if it is ready for pick up:

  • Log into the library catalog
  • Search for the book you want to borrow
  • Place a hold on the book by pressing the “hold” button

Important: Before coming to the school please remember to check your child’s library account in Destiny Discover to see if books have been checked out to your child. If books are listed under “checkout”, that means that book(s) you requested will be waiting for you to pick up on Monday. If they are still under “holds” they are not ready for pickup.

HOW DO I RETURN BOOKS? A book drop is located in the front main entrance of the school for your book returns. Return books any weekday between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. on days when the school is open. If you do not pick up your book during your pick up window, the book will be re-shelved for the next student to borrow.
