CWES Weekly Happenings

From the Principal's Desk

Dear Families,

E Pluribus Unum. Out of many, one.

This unofficial motto of the US came to mind this week as I worked to finalize schedule placements for students to begin in-person instruction in the coming weeks. Poring over a spreadsheet of student siblings to align family schedules as best I could, I discovered something amazing.

CWES students have siblings in THIRTY-ONE other FCPS schools. Our CWES families are also members of several other school communities across the division. They bring to CWES the experiences and wisdom of so very many other FCPS schools. I thought this fact was extraordinary.

Out of many schools, one CWES. A little digging led me to the likely original use of the Latin phrase: the quote below.

"When each person loves the other as much as himself, it makes one out of many.”    – Cicero, 44 BC, paraphrasing Pythagorus

This further context resonated with me, because I know that our community doesn't automatically benefit from that diversity of experience without intention. Our collective differences stand to benefit each other most when paired with effort, with service. Unity is a choice individually made and collectively enjoyed. Unity takes commitment. Unity takes love.

We invite you to lend your voices to the soundtrack of CWES. cWEs CAN grow stronger together when we learn from our varied experiences.

Please consider joining our PTA at https://cwespta.ptboard.com/. At our next general membership meeting in March we will meet the nominees of the all-new PTA Executive Board for next year. How can we strengthen the CWES community across virtual and in-person settings this spring? We want to learn from you.

We will need your ideas for the 2021-2022 school year. How can we deepen the partnership between our school and our families? How can we learn from the other schools and PTAs of which you are also a member? How can we live out our commitments to equity and inclusion to embrace all students and families? How can we ensure everyone feels welcome and valued as members of our vibrant, diverse community?

Help us make one out of many. Our WE depends on you.

Warm regards,

Diane Leipzig, Dr. L

Parent Information Sessions

flexible

We have planned THREE parent information sessions to provide you with information about the upcoming transition that will impact our school:

1. In-person days (Hybrid and monitoring, health and safety procedures)

2. Virtual days (Virtual and concurrent models of instruction)

3. Sixth grade (How departmentalization will work)

Please contact Mr. Reeder (wsreeder1@fcps.edu) if you require interpreting for these sessions.

Parent Information Session About In-Person Days: Monday, February 22 6:30-8:00

LINK: https://us.bbcollab.com/guest/d9ce07628eea49fd89764105dd3edb75

This session will compare the in-person hybrid model to the in-person supervised option and will review health and safety procedures common to both. We will review what to expect for the first two weeks after the transition to in-person learning for both groups. NOTE: This session is applicable for any families sending their children back to the school building.

Parent Information Session About Virtual Days: Wednesday, February 24 6:30-8:00

LINK: https://us.bbcollab.com/guest/d9ce07628eea49fd89764105dd3edb75

(Note date change: Original date conflicted with Purim.)

This session will compare the concurrent model to the current virtual model, and what to expect for the first two weeks after the transition to the hybrid/concurrent model. NOTE: This session is applicable for all families; all students will have at least 2 virtual days.

NEW! Parent Information Session About Sixth Grade: Tuesday, March 2 6:30-8:00

LINK: https://us.bbcollab.com/guest/d9ce07628eea49fd89764105dd3edb75

Questions have arisen about how departmentalization will work for sixth grade when the transition to in-person learning occurs. This session will describe both in-person and virtual days for sixth grade students. Content from both sessions above will be recapped and applied to the specific schedules for sixth graders.

School Tours, Office Hours

Our office is open to serve you, 8:45-4:45 every day!

We held kindergartner tours in November and are excited to welcome our youngest learners to our building this week, along with certain students in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing program!

Now, we would like to extend our warm welcome to students in grades 1-6. If your child is new to CWES or your child is anxious about returning to the school building, you may wish to take a tour as a family leading up to the in-person transition in the coming weeks.

Tours conducted by office staff will be available daily Monday, February 22 through Monday, March 8, 9:00 - 9:20, with 8 slots per day. You'll be asked to complete a health screening questionnaire and wear a mask to enter the building.

Health Screening Commitment Form Required for In-Person Students

We still have many missing Health Screening Commitment Forms.

This document confirms that a parent/caregiver/guardian will complete a daily health screening and will keep students home when they are ill.

It is REQUIRED to return to the building.

The Health Commitment form can be submitted electronically through in ParentVUE (PVUE), or via hard copy.

For your convenience, we have also created this Google Form to collect your responses.
