NEW News

1. Message from Dr. Floyd

Good afternoon Woodson Families:

Our teachers returned to the building this week!  We are so thankful to our PTSO for their incredible generosity in providing Grab & Go "stuff your desk" snacks to our staff in preparation for concurrent instruction.

If your student is returning to the building in the next phase, please make sure your Health Commitment form has been completed and send your Cavalier back with a fully charged laptop. Check your email as we have sent several updates.  If you have not been receiving these updates and you are expecting your child to return in person next week, please contact me as soon as possible at cefloyd@fcps.edu.

If your student remains virtual, we will see you on our big screens in classrooms. Now is the time to use your camera so we can see all of our Cavaliers' faces!

Enjoy the weekend, I’m hoping the rain will bring spring flowers!

Dr. Floyd

Black History Month

Woodson faculty and staff celebrated Black History Month with a Grab & Go luncheon and enjoyed this display of some African American Firsts created by administrative assistant Ms. Sheppard.

2. New Bell Schedule

March Bell Schedule with Lunch Shirts

Students will learn their lunch shifts during 5th and 6th periods.

3. English 11 Writing SOL

Students in English 11 classes who registered for the Writing SOL will take the test on Monday, March 1 (both components in one day) or Mondays, March 15th & 22nd (one component per day).

Please contact Kathleen Guinee, Assessment Coach at kpguinee@fcps.edu if you have questions.

4. PSAT for 10th Graders on April 19th

On Monday, April 19th, Woodson High School tenth graders will have the opportunity to take the PSAT 10.

FCPS will cover the cost for any tenth grade student to take this test.

General information about the PSAT 10 test format is available on the College Board webpage (https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/psat-nmsqt-psat-10).

Monday, April 19th has been designated for independent learning in FCPS high schools, so students who choose to take the PSAT 10 will not miss synchronous instruction or intervention with their teachers.

A form to register your student will be sent on or before March 1st.

We will share more details about test day schedules and bus transportation in the coming weeks.

FCPS health and safety protocols for PSAT 10 administration are available online (https://www.fcps.edu/node/41891).

Staff Grab & Go

THANK YOU, PTSO for your generous donations for the staff Grab & Go snacks! We are so grateful for these treats!

5. Cav Congress Guest Speaker

On Monday, February 22nd, second year Virginia Commonwealth University, doctoral student Ms. Kori Nicolai, was the guest speaker at Cav Congress.

Ms. Nicolai is part of a project that won a $50,000 grant from the W.T. Foundation and was awarded a fellowship from the Southern Regional Education Board. Ms. Nicolai’s research focuses on student motivation, ethnic identity, and belonging. She is a member of the Holmes Scholars program and is the secretary and treasurer.

Woodson students enjoyed hearing Ms. Nicolai’s story: a detailed look at her experience as a student, from her upbringing as the only Latina family in a North Dakota town, to her experience of greater diversity when she moved to Virginia, to her post-high school educational path of community college, to transferring to James Madison University, and now as a doctoral student at VCU. Ms. Nicolai shared the many ways her research and service work relate to equity, student motivation, and student voice.

6. Orchestra Open Mic Night

Tri-M Music Honor Society cordially invites you to our first virtual Open Mic Night, titled Love is in the Air. (Happy Belated Valentine’s Day!)

Feel free to enjoy some awesome music as your schedule allows – what a perfect to start the weekend. I’m sure students would love to see your cheers and messages. It will be premiered through our channel here:

https://youtu.be/1n4jiHEsNfQ

The production was done by students, from start to finish. It features honor society members on many, many different instruments – voice, piano, ukulele, strings, wind instruments, you name them! Students have put a lot of hours, polishing, and effort into each act.

Orchestra Director Bomin Collins is so excited to share the students' creativity and talent, and hope this brings musical joy and positivity all around you.

12. Google Chrome Sync

As part of FCPS’s ongoing effort to support student use of technology, Chrome Sync and the ability to save passwords will be available as an option starting on February 18th.  Students are not required to use Chrome Sync and save passwords, but may choose to do so in order to:

  • reduce their log-in time.
  • access bookmarks and extensions across devices.

Chrome will remember and offer saved passwords when students are logging into different instructional applications. Chrome will also make bookmarks and extensions available on any device in which the student logs into Chrome and turns on Sync.

If your student would like to use Chrome Sync and save passwords, support resources are available on the FCPS website.  If your child is logging into Chrome now, they may need to log out of Chrome and log back in to see the new features.

15. Parent Technology Help Desk

To support families who are working with their children during distance learning, FCPS launched a new Parent Technology Help Desk. The number is 1-833-921-3277 (833-921-FCPS). It will be answered by staff 7 a.m.to 11 p.m., seven days a week. If the help desk is unable to solve the issue on the phone with the parent or guardian, they will enter a ticket on the parent’s behalf and the request for help will be transferred to the appropriate FCPS team.

Parents or guardians who need help in a language other than English should let help desk staff know, and a interpreter will join them on the line. (FCPS also has existing parent information phone lines, available in eight different languages, that can assist with general questions about FCPS.)

FCPS has also set up an online portal to allow older students and parents and guardians to request technology help directly.
