Fairfax Academy Families,
It is hard to believe it is almost March and we are able to once again begin welcoming students back to the building for in-person instruction. Whether your family has chosen in-person or virtual for the remainder of the school year, we are excited to support each of our students and wanted to send out a few reminders for all since there will be a lot going on over the next few weeks.

Academy Forms and Student Drivers
A reminder that for all students returning to the building we are required to collect a couple of items including the Health Screening Commitment Form, Emergency Care Form, Health Information Form and Parking Application with supporting documentation for students who are driving and parking on school grounds. All forms can be found on our website and can be submitted via email to Mrs. Cate.
**It is important that parents of in-person students complete the Parent/Guardian Health Screening Commitment form in ParentVue and conduct the health screening questions each day. If students are ill, need to quarantine, or have any COVID-like symptoms, they should stay home. In these instances, students can access the virtual class from home if they are able. Parents should report any absences to the attendance line (703-219-4060).
School Catch-Up Days and Asynchronous Teacher Planning Days
We will have Academy wide catch-up days on February 23rd and February 24th. The catch-up days will allow for students to log in to their class, learn what extra support is needed and assignments they might be missing, and complete missing assignments during each class period. Teachers will be available during each period to assist students as well.
To prepare for student return, February 25th and February 26th will be asynchronous days across FCPS for teacher planning. This means students will be given assignments/learning opportunities to complete while their teachers finish setting up their classroom spaces for concurrent learning, participate in professional learning, and work with colleague teachers on lesson planning. Teachers will not be available by class period the way they are scheduled to be on February 23rd and February 24th.
Concurrent Instruction
Beginning March 2nd, the vast majority of our classes will be conducted using concurrent instruction in which in-person students receive two days of teacher-led instruction in the school building and two days of teacher-led instruction at home. Virtual students and in-person students will be in the same class. Concurrent instruction is necessary for several reasons, but perhaps most notable; is the ability to minimize student schedule changes. Given that we will be well into the third quarter by March 2nd, we want to have as few schedule changes as possible.
Please note that some teachers will remain virtual for the remainder of the year, so classroom monitors have been hired to assist students when they attend class in the building. The teacher will continue to lead the class and handle all teaching responsibilities, including grading. The monitor will assist the teacher and provide in-person guidance and supervision. We will send letters to those students who will have a classroom monitor next week.
Below you will find additional information on our Career Experience Expo being held Monday, February 22, Bell Schedules, and Arrival Procedures for in-person students. Shuttle riders will be dropped off at Door #10. Depending upon your class you will be directed to enter through Door #10 (MCT, MTAS, Social Media Marketing, Arabic), Door #13 (TV, Photo, Fashion, Dance), or the door to the trailer (ASL, Chinese, Korean).
Student drivers need to park in the upper back parking lot, closest to Old Lee Highway in a spot numbered A1-A38 or a numbered student spot. They will then need to enter through door #10 and check in with Mrs. Cate to pick up their parking pass. (All paperwork should be submitted prior to a students’ return to the building.)
Academy staff will be outside for the first few weeks directing students to the appropriate doors and helping them find their classes.
Academy shuttle information will be sent out directly to parents and students by the end of next week.

Sign-ups for our 3rd annual Career Experience Expo are still open! It will only take a couple of minutes for your student to complete this Google Form to sign-up and attend this amazing career experience on Monday, February 22nd.
This fully virtual event for all current Fairfax Academy students will begin with keynote speaker David ‘DEZ’ Zambrano, a custom airbrush artist, muralist, and canvas artist. He has garnered wide notoriety with his artwork on footwear, providing custom work for professional athletes.
Zambrano’s presentation will be followed by three 45-minute workshop sessions led by a wide-variety of over 20+ industry professionals. During this full-day conference, students will select a workshop (of their personal preference) for each of the three designated 45-minute sessions throughout the day.
Industry professionals include David Zobell and Matt Strote of Signature Theatre; City of Fairfax Cultural Arts manager Megan Dubois; iContact Coaching; Academy alumna and Oklahoma senior admissions counselor, Monica Brown; Academy alumna and textile designer for Jaipur Living Sarah Dowell; Longwood University associate professor in communications Dr. Ryan Stouffer; Academy alumni and owner of Movoly Productions Brian Rose; music director, conductor, and pianist Jose Simbulan; Encore Ballroom Couture owner Julie Wilson; dance instructor Andrew Black; director and choreographer from J.A.M. the Revue Jeremy McShan; Xtended Reality Junkies co-owners Rob Sanchez and Marc Collier, Deliberately Designed College and Career owner and Marshall Academy Counselor, Niki Hauber; Academy alumna and Social Media Marketer in the U.S. Department of State, Bebe Tran; movie director, Hyung Tae Kim; and Rassi Borneo, professional photographer and owner of Timeline Media.
Before the Expo, students will receive an email with directives and a link to the ‘Expo Google Site’ that will house everything they will need for the event. All session and speaker information and resources will be included on that site for students to refer to during the event and review to select the workshops they plan to attend.
