What's Happening at Mount Eagle

February 19, 2021

Reporting COVID Cases at School

This week, we reported about a staff member that tested positive for COVID. It was our first time making such a report, and as we bring more staff and children back into the building, the likelihood of this happening again increases. Here are some important takeaways:

  • We are required to report when any person has tested positive for COVID and visited our school within the past 14 days. A communication goes out to the entire community. You received such a letter this past Tuesday as well as a follow up letter on Thursday morning when the Health Department concluded its investigation.
  • We report this information to the Fairfax County Health Department who then begins contact tracing. They will reach out to the each person they determine to be at-risk of infection.
  • The Health Department and FCPS will work together to determine what, if any next steps, need to be taken with quarantines for individuals, classrooms or the school.
  • Staff at Mount Eagle are not authorized to share private information about anyone's COVID status.

If you have questions about our procedures, please don't hesitate to reach out. Thank you to everyone for sharing updates that help keep us all safe. We're all in this together.

Talking to Your Children About Race & Racism

Edison Pyramid Principals have partnered with our respective parent organizations to provide parents in the Edison Community an opportunity to meet virtually with Dr. Joseph Williams from the University of Virginia (UVa) to discuss the benefits of talking to children about race and racism. Dr. Williams is an Associate Professor of Counselor Education and is affiliated with the UVa Center for Race and Public Education in the South. If you are interested in learning more about how to speak to your child about topics around race and culture that may be uncomfortable, difficult, or highly emotional, please join us to find out about some of the recommended best practices from Dr. Williams.

Date: Thursday, February 25th, 2020

Time: 6:00 – 7:00 p.m.

If you would like to participate, please sign up using this Google Form as space is limited: https://forms.gle/xvYvuNC13eqUaNEr5

Return to School Updates

Students whose families chose in-person learning will begin returning to Mount Eagle for two full-days of instruction on Tuesdays & Wednesday. Here is the schedule:

Tuesday, February 23: Head Start & Kindergarten begin

Tuesday, March 9: Grades 1 & 2 begin

Tuesday, March 16: Grades 3-6 begin

We chose in-person for our child. What days & time will my child be at school?

We will have students in the building on Tuesdays & Wednesdays from 9:00-3:30pm. (see above for specific return date) If your child is a bus rider, please be at the bus stop by 8:35am. In the afternoon, buses will return at 3:35pm. On Thursdays & Fridays, your child will be at home and having school online.

Walkers and Kiss-n-Ride may arrive at 8:50am. Doors will open at 8:55am. Please do not drop your child off before 8:50am because there is no supervision.

My child will remain virtual. What changes will there be to the schedule?

All students who are virtual will have their same schedule with the same teacher Tuesday - Friday. Your child will have the same teacher. On Tuesdays & Wednesdays, some lessons will be concurrent, meaning students who are in the classroom will be interacting with students who are at home online.

I've read that the bell schedule will change beginning Tuesday, February 16. What does this mean?

Some schools in FCPS will change to a new start time in order to coordinate with bus schedules. At Mount Eagle, we made the adjustment at the start of the school year, so there will be no change. Morning meeting and attendance will still begin at 9:00am, and school ends at 3:30pm for all students whether they are in person or online. On March 9, there will be an adjustment to the online schedule, and we'll share that closer to that date.

Can I make a change to in-person or to virtual?

If you would like to change to virtual, you may do so. Please note that this change is for the rest of the school year. If you would like to change to in-person, it will be approved only if there is space. Please contact the office if you would like to be considered for this change.

Thank you for your flexibility and patience. Whether your child is in-person or virtual, our team is committed to bringing excellent teaching and learning experiences to your child.

mask

Masks: What's okay?

All students who come to school must have masks that fit their face snugly. Please do not give your child an adult mask that is too big. Also, masks with valves are not allowed at school. If your child needs a replacement mask during the school day, we can provide one. Masks must be worn on all buses and throughout the day, except for eating.

Meal Pick-up Schedule

Grab & Go: Daily pick-up of breakfast & lunch

Meal Kit: Weekly pick-up of a kit that has 7 days worth of meals

NEW SCHEDULE

Every Monday- Friday: Grab & Go at 1:10-1:20pm.

Every Wednesday: Meal Kit from 8:00am - 12:30pm

Thank you to everyone for your flexibility. These changes have been made to better serve the community and to help with the transition to in-person instruction.
