Churchill Chatter - Issue 27, February 21, 2021

Churchill Families,

We are eagerly awaiting the return of our kindergarten students this week and our first through sixth graders in a few short weeks! We have been working hard to make sure that everything is ready for these exciting days.

Please note that we can no longer able to accept parent requests for intent changes as we are nearly at capacity across many grade levels. We will be focusing our efforts on supporting teachers with concurrent instruction and ensuring the safety of every student and staff member in our building. This means revisiting protocols and transitions we need to monitor throughout the day. We will be spending time meeting with our custodial and cafeteria staff, as well as office staff, to ensure we are meeting all expectations for the required mitigation strategies. Any grace you can provide us during these next few weeks is much appreciated!

Sincerely,

Ms. Pierson and Ms. Niccolls

Picture Day  Monday, February 22

Picture Day is tomorrow, Monday, February 22, between 12 noon and 7 p.m. All of the information about Picture Day is available on the CRS PTA website. There is a possibility of inclement weather Sunday evening February 21 into Monday morning, February 22.  Please know that if FCPS closes the buildings on Monday, Picture Day will be cancelled.  Individuals who have signed up will received notification of the cancellation through Sign Up Genius (SUG).

Picture Day Food Drive -- Tomorrow!

In a time of unprecedented uncertainty, many families are faced with the additional challenge of determining how they will put food on their tables. It’s estimated that up to one in four children experienced food insecurity in 2020. Going to class hungry only adds to the challenges many students are facing this year. SHARE of McLean supports members of our community who are facing economic hardship. You can help them meet the needs of the more than 1,500 families they serve by participating in the Picture Day Food Drive.

SHARE is in need of “kid-friendly” food. This includes:

  • Snack items (granola bars, crackers, fun-sized chips, etc.)
  • Canned or cupped fruit and vegetables
  • Shelf-stable meals (macaroni and cheese, canned soup, cereal, etc.)

Items will be collected at CRS on Picture Day – February 22nd, 12:00 noon – 7:00 p.m.

Library Book Curbside Pickup
Changed to Wednesday February 24

Library book curbside pickup this week will be on WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 24 from 1 p.m. – 3 p.m., at the front entrance of the school, for students who received an email that their books are available.

There will be NO CURBSIDE PICKUP ON MONDAY, February 22 due to Picture Day.  However,  bins will be available to return overdue library books on Monday when you come for your pictures.  Thank you. Questions?  Email Mrs. Warren – sewarren@fcps.edu.

TJ’s Techstravaganza

Tomorrow’s Women in Science and Technology (TWIST), a student organization at Thomas Jefferson (TJ) HS,  promotes STEM through our annual flagship outreach event, Techstravaganza, and we would love for your students to attend!

Techstravaganza is a free, public STEM activity fair for elementary and middle school students in the DC Metropolitan area where many TJ students and corporate exhibitors interact with bright, young students through various engaging STEM activities ranging from live demonstrations to hands-on activities. This year, Techstravaganza will be from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 15th, 2021. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, this year’s Techstravaganza will be hosted synchronously online. Churchill Road Spelling Bee Champion Crowned

We had record sign-ups for the CRS Spelling Bee this year with 77 students! Congratulations to all the students who participated in this year's Bee, which was held virtually through Scripp's new online testing platform. This year's challenging words included viridescent, bitumen, and parabolize - we are so impressed by the talented spellers at CRS! The competition was intense and incredibly close, with our top 5 finishers all scoring within a point of each other! This year's top spellers are...

  1. Tom Moran, 6th Grade
  2. Sophie Cao, 6th Grade
  3. Robert Barnes, 6th Grade
  4. Esther Choi, 5th Grade
  5. Zeeshan Huang, 6th Grade

Good luck to this year's champion, Tom, who will next compete in the Fairfax County Spelling Bee! A special congratulations and thank you to the fifteen 6th graders who participated in their last Bee at CRS, and we hope to see our other aspiring spellers at next year's Bee!
