Upcoming Events
New Bell Schedule
As more students return for in-person learning, it is necessary to revise the bell schedule to accommodate more bus runs. The school day will be reduced by 15 minutes due to the increased cleaning time required between bus runs.
The new bell schedule which will take effect February 16, 2021 for both virtual and in-person instruction is available below and can also be viewed here.

Chrome Sync for Students
As part of FCPS’s ongoing effort to support student use of technology, Chrome Sync and the ability to save passwords will be available as an option starting on February 18th. Students are not required to use Chrome Sync and save passwords, but may choose to them in order to:
- reduce their log-in time.
- access bookmarks and extensions across devices.
Chrome will remember and offer saved passwords when students are logging into different instructional applications. Chrome will also make bookmarks and extensions available on any device in which the student logs into Chrome and turns on Sync.
If your student would like to use Chrome Sync and save passwords, support resources are available on the FCPS website. If your child is logging into Chrome now, they may need to log out of Chrome and log back in to see the new features.

College Partnership Program (CPP)
Applications for the 2021-22 school year are being accepted now. The deadline to apply is March 19, 2021 at www.tinyurl.com/CPPApp2021 . Current CPP students do not need to reapply.
What is CPP? The College Partnership Program (CPP) is designed to assist students who are traditionally underrepresented in college (i.e First Generation, African-American, Hispanic, American Indian or Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander, English Learners, students with disabilities or economically disadvantaged) in exploring, applying and enrolling in college. In accordance with FCPS’ goal to eliminate gaps in opportunity, access and achievement for all students, CPP focuses on academic advising, college visits, parent engagement and preparation beyond high school.

HHS Orchestra Spirit Day
Get a meal or snack at CFA North Point Village this THIS FRIDAY Feb 19th at Chick-fil-A North Point Village in Reston, all day!
BEFORE you order, please mention you are there to support Herndon Orchestra (or HORNET), and 25% of the proceeds will go to the HHS orchestra to offset expenses.

February 25-26: Asynchronous Work Days
In order for us to allow staff the time need to adequately prepare for concurrent instruction, February 25-26 will be asynchronous work days for students. These days had originally been scheduled for January. Students will not log-in to class, however, they will have assignments to work on independently.

World Language Credit Exam
The 2021 Credit Exam for World Languages will take place in March of 2021. Students who take the credit exam have the opportunity to earn up to three (3) credits, based on demonstrated proficiency.
Thirty (30) languages will be assessed via the FCPS Credit Exam. In order to offer the test in all languages while maintaining a safe testing environment, some languages will be tested online and some will be tested in person.
- These languages will be tested online between March 2, 2021 and March 10, 2021: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish.
- These languages will be tested in person on March 13, 2021 and March 20, 2021 (Saturdays): Amharic, ASL, Bengali, Farsi, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Nepali, Pashto, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Somali, Tagalog, Tamil, Telugu, Tigrinya, Turkish, Twi, Urdu and Vietnamese.
Registration opens Monday, February 8, 2021, at 8:00 a.m. and closes at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 26, 2021. All students must register for the exam through their school counselor by February 26, 2021. Late registrations will not be accepted.

AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination)
If you have the desire and interest in attending college, but may need additional support and resources, then AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) may be right for you! AVID helps with organizational and note-taking skills as well as preparing for college. We welcome all eighth and ninth grade students to apply to be a part of this wonderful team!

Online Application for Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology Open
Deadline to Apply is February 26
The online application for students interested in applying for admission to Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST), a Regional Governor’s School in Fairfax County focused on science and technology, will be available beginning Monday, February 1. The application will be posted on the admissions web page.
The Fairfax County School Board approved changes to the admissions process that will be used to select students for the class of 2025. The changes include using a comprehensive review aimed at improving diversity and access.
Qualified applicants will be enrolled in Honors Algebra or beyond, Honors Science, and one other honors course (waivers available for honors requirements this year only), along with achieving a core grade point average of 3.5. Applicants will also complete a Student Portrait Sheet and problem-solving essay, which will be administered later this spring and are not a part of the initial application.
Applications must be submitted by Friday, February 26, at 4 p.m. Visit the TJHSST admissions website for more information.

From the Library
- It’s the final day to enter the Love Your Library contest! How many fun-sized pieces of wrapped candy did we squeeze into a 128-ounce jar? The student or staff member who guesses the right number will have a big jar of candy and a gift card to Scrawl Books! Pictures of the jar are on your student’s HHS Library course in Blackboard. Encourage your student to complete the entry form at https://forms.gle/1M142QVUuK3VT34U7. The winner will be announced Tuesday, February 16.
- When the snow falls, books are still available! Students have access to a large number of ebooks through their MackinVIA accounts. They can read the ebooks on their laptops, or (if they download the MackinVIA app) on their personal devices. Students who would like to check out physical books can log into their Destiny accounts with their FCPS credentials, and place up to five books on hold. They will receive a confirmation email from the library team when the books are available.
- Is your student looking for help with an assignment? Book recommendations? They can meet virtually with a member of the library team every school day! Our virtual office hours on BBCU allow students to connect with us from 8:00 – 11:00 on Mondays, and before school, during Stingers and lunch, and after school on other school days.

Talking Points
Herndon High School is excited to start using TalkingPoints as a platform for communicating with families. Parents/Guardians will receive TalkingPoints messages as SMS text messages. Text messages will be in English or automatically translated into the family's correspondence language. You can respond in English or respond in another language and it will be translated into English for the school. Parents/Guardians do not need to do anything to enroll.
TalkingPoints is free! There’s no charge if you have an unlimited texting plan. If not, standard text messaging fees apply. If you don’t want to receive SMS text messages, you can download the free TalkingPoints for Parents Mobile App in the app store on iPhone or Android! Free Virtual Tutoring
For the past 19 years, Herndon United Methodist Church has been offering free, in-person tutoring to HHS students. We are excited to announce the start of Virtual TGFT [Thank God for Tutors] with a brand new website: herndonumc.org/tgft. Our team of ten adult tutors are ready to help your students in chemistry, physics and all areas of math.
Students should pre-register their name and subject choice via the Google form on the website. We look forward to helping your students succeed!

Academic Advising and Course Selection for 2021-22
During January, February and March all school counselors will meet with each of their rising 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th graders individually to selection courses for the 2021-22 school year. During this time, your child's school counselor will review with them the course selection materials imperative to this process (course selection sheet, course catalog, and our Virtual Curriculum Fair). In the next few weeks it important this information is reviewed as course offerings are dependent upon enrollment and school staffing decisions are based on the course selections students make. Please know, to ensure appropriate placement, all course selections will be discussed with and reviewed by the school counselor.

Academic Advising and Course Selection Timeline
- February 03-17: Rising Junior Course Selection (through English classes)

- February 22-25: Rising Sophomore Course Selection (through Science classes)
- March 01-12: Make-up Academic Advising & Course Selection
- Before March 12: Requests for course changes will be honored
- March 15-June 02: No course request changes will be permitted.
- June 03-10: Email communication will be sent to families regarding course requests. If space permits, course request changes can be made through your child’s school counselor. Course request changes will be made only to resolve conflicts, to accommodate credit requirements, and/or because student has failed to meet prerequisite(s).
Freshman and New Student Orientation for In-Person Students Only
On Monday, March 1st Herndon High School will be conducting an in-person orientation for CURRENT (2020-21) 9th graders and new students to HHS this year. There will be two one-hour sessions divided by alphabet: 9am (last names A-K) and 1pm (last names L-Z). Bus transportation will be provided (details forthcoming). The sessions will include, staff introductions, review of health/safety protocols, meeting class sponsors, and a tour of our newly renovated building. If you have a current Freshman, or newly enrolled student at HHS this year, we look forward to formally introducing you to our school and all Herndon HS has to offer! Mark your calendar! Please note: Due to health restrictions, it is mandated that students can only come at their designated time. Students must also wear a mask AND have a completed COVID-19 Health Screening Questionnaire (available in English and Spanish) with them upon arrival.

TEEN JOB FAIRS
Fairfax County and the area Chamber of Commerce offices will host two fairs open to all teens looking for employment and volunteer opportunities. The fair will also host resume and career building sessions. The fairs will be held on March 13th, 2-5pm and March 20, 11am- 2pm. Who - Seniors who did not take pictures in September or December and seniors who would like to retake their pictures
Next steps - The students are asked to log onto the PrestigePortraits.com website to "self-schedule" their appointment. All seniors that have not been photographed will receive an appointment card in the mail. The appointment cards have a date range listed when we will be at the school. The student then uses their unique ID number to log onto PrestigePortraits.com to select a date/time convenient for them. To help with the "No-Touch" policy, students/parents are encouraged to pay the sitting fee online when making their appointment. Parents and students who are unable to pay online will be able to make onsite payments using cash, check, or credit card.
