From the Principal’s Desk
Many thanks for the heartfelt welcome from the Cub Run community! Now in my second week as your principal, I can already feel what a warm and special place Cub Run is. In meeting with staff one-on-one over the last eight days, common themes have emerged—words like family, supportive, community, and friendship—as staff share what they love most about Cub Run. I am truly lucky to be joining such a community.
At yesterday evening’s PTA meeting, Mrs. Sobeski and I enjoyed connecting with parents and answering their questions about our Return-to-School plans. If you weren’t able to join us, click here for the slides, and please let us know if you have any questions.
As we celebrate Black History Month in February and honor Black and African American voices year-round, I highly recommend families check out the amazing resources on The Brown Bookshelf, a blog created by a group of authors and illustrators who came together to raise awareness of the myriad of African American voices writing for young readers. They frequently update their list of recommended books that feature Black and African American historical and contemporary figures in non-fiction and engaging characters in fiction. I love hearing about books that students and families enjoy together, so please feel free to email your recommendations to me! 😊
With snowy weather coming, I wish all of you a warm rest of the week!
All best,
Mrs. Lorenzi
Meal Service Update
This week we have changed our meal distribution time to 10:00am-12:30pm for Grab and Go and Bulk Meal Kit sites to reduce our staff exposure to cold temperatures; however, staff will serve participants if they arrive before 10am. In addition, meal service will be canceled for Monday, February 15th for President's Day. Meals for Monday will be served on Friday, February 12th. Information related to meal service changes can be found on the website (https://www.fcps.edu/return-school/food) and an e-notify message was sent to households this week.

Next Round of Monday Club Opportunities (Optional for Students)
The latest round of enrichment activities is underway! There are again three time blocks (though, now in the afternoon) with different options to choose from during each block. Descriptions for the next round of options are below and the detailed schedule can be found on the sign-up form. Students who register by the end of the day, Thursday, 2/18, will receive an invitation to join (by the teacher of the club) in-time for the sessions on Monday, 2/22. (Reminder: this coming Monday is a holiday.) Sign-ups received after Thursday evenings must wait until the next week of clubs to join. Please sign-up via the following form as soon as possible: https://forms.gle/W3ZhfSr2oWe3Y6d66
Art Club (with Ms. Brock) will be “Playing with Paper!” Students will use paper for things beyond drawing. They will make books, origami, paper planes, and discover other creative uses for paper. They will fold, cut, glue, and more to find out the wide variety of things that paper is capable of!
Band Club (with Mr. Holscher) The 5th Grade session remains open to beginner students. The 6th Grade session is open to all 6th Grade students as an opportunity to reinforce skills learned in class.
Music Clubs (with Ms. Milroy) will offer the following options:
Chorus Club (Grades 4-6): Students will be learning two songs. At the end of the club, they will record themselves singing the songs so that Mrs. Milroy can create a virtual chorus. This club is now open to 4th graders in addition to 5th and 6th graders.
Dance Club (Pre-K to 2nd Grade): Students will learn fun and upbeat dances! The last club day they will have a dance party with all the dances we’ve learned.
Music Technology Club (Grades 3-4): Students will explore fun music programs including Chrome Music Lab, Boomwhackers, and more!
Reading Club (with Mr. Timpson) is for students who love to read and want to talk about what they are reading.
‘Sports Talk’ Club (with Mr. Dofflemyer) is for students who love to talk about sports. They will discuss their favorites, learn about new ones, and share ideas.
Strings Club (with Ms. Jimenez) remains open to 4th-6th Grade students as an opportunity to work on extracurricular music of different genres, while reinforcing skills learned in class. The 5th & 6th Grade Beginner Strings sessions will continue for students who previously enrolled.

Student Laptop Support
Remember, FCPS has a ‘Parent Technology Help Desk’ (not located at the school), which can be reached at 833-921-3277, between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m., seven days a week. Should you need help in a language other than English, you can ask the ‘Parent Help Desk’ for an interpreter to help with the call. In lieu of calling, you may also submit a ticket at: https://itweb.fcps.edu/itsupport If you suspect your child’s laptop has a hardware issue, a ticket must first be initiated with the ‘Parent Help Desk’ before local school personnel can arrange a swap. NOTE: If you contact the FCPS Help Desk after business hours and/or they are unable to correct the issue, they will forward a request ticket to the school’s tech specialist who will follow-up directly on the next school day.
Also, as many students prepare to return to school in-person in the coming weeks, please make sure that all school-issued laptops are fully functional. If there are any issues, please contact the ‘Parent Help Desk’ as soon as possible to begin the process of having them addressed so that students are fully prepared when they return to the building.
Lastly, many issues can be resolved by simply following these steps:
- Drive over the nearest FCPS school.
- Power on (from scratch) or restart the laptop once you are at the school and close enough to connect to the ‘Fairfax’ WiFi network. (At Cub Run, you can remain in your car if you park in the spaces right next to the building in the ‘Kiss & Ride’ lot.)
- Login to the computer (with the student’s credentials) and verify connection to the network by trying to access any website.
- Allow the computer to “sit” on the network for at least 10 minutes.
- Restart the computer and allow any updates to install.
- Login to the computer to again verify network connectivity.
- Depending on how many updates are missing, this process may need to be repeated.

The Positivity Project
This week Cub Run has been learning about LOVE.
Next week, we will begin learning about HUMILITY. Humble people have an accurate (not underestimated) sense of their abilities and achievements. They hold the capacity to acknowledge their mistakes and limitations and are open to advice and new ideas. They do not show off their possessions or accomplishments.
