2/15 -  Presidents’ Day - No School

th

Happy Friday...grab those jackets. Groundhog’s Day was this week, and Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow. According to tradition, that means that we are in for six more weeks of winter. We saw some of that this past week with a few days of snow. So, stay bundled and stay safe indoors for a bit longer. Some of you may not mind being indoors watching the Super bowl this Sunday taking place in sunny Tampa Bay.

As we transition in a month to receiving students for in-person instruction, we wanted to let you know that we will be communicating with those families of the returning students about specific safety procedures. We are ready for your children at Lanier! You can see by the photos (below) of some of our students who have gradually begun to return by invitation that our concurrent model is beginning to be implemented. Look for an email next week with information about your child’s specific in-person days and transportation plans. All students can receive free lunch and breakfast when they are in-school (to include being able to take meals home for the other days if needed).

For those students who will remain virtual, a few reminders. Our food distribution site is still open with free school lunches and breakfasts packaged in weekly bags; curbside pick-up happens every Wednesday. We will begin to encourage all students remaining virtual to please turn on their cameras as much as possible once we begin concurrent instruction (teachers instructing both in-person and virtual students simultaneously) in March. This will help us build a stronger community and allow your at-home learners to feel more connected. Please speak with our counselors if you need assistance with implementing this in your home. Some students have found that having their back to a wall or hanging a towel behind them helps to maintain the privacy of their homes and helps them feel more comfortable using the camera feature.

In closing, as we begin to celebrate Black History Month, a fitting national announcement came out yesterday. Northrop Grumman revealed the name of the next spacecraft that they will send to the International Space Station: SS Katherine Johnson. Be sure to click the link above for this timely announcement celebrating our school’s namesake! If anyone out there has a connection at Northrop Grumman that could get them to take one of our new KJMS vinyl clings to space, let us know. We are the country’s FIRST Katherine Johnson Middle School.

Stay warm,

Tammy Hanna

Lanier Science Olympiad

The Lanier Science Olympiad teams, the Orbitals & Trajectories, participated in the Newton Regional competition on January 30 and we're happy to announce that they had an extremely strong performance, receiving an invitation to the State championship tournament in March for the second year in a row!  The teams, named in honor of Lanier's soon-to-be namesake Katherine Johnson, finished in 4th place overall and garnered top 10 finishes in 18 out of 26 events.  Our students deserve extra recognition for their perseverance, passion, and patience this season in particular as the tournaments transitioned to an all-virtual format and many of the events had to be completely re-invented.  We wish the teams the best of luck as they move forward to complete their Science Olympiad quest that got interrupted last season by the pandemic.

Medal winners included:

#1 - Fossils - Colleen & Oliver

#3 - Write It CAD It - Foster & Sanjeev

#4 - Road Scholar - Ayaan & Colleen

#5 - Water Quality - Eirene & Asha

#5 - Ornithology - Bryson & Oliver

#6 - Digital Structures - Ayaan & Ishaan

#6 - Machines - Ashvatt & Ishaan

#6 - Reach for the Stars - Ryeen & Johaan

A special thanks to Mr. Jeff Mishak for being an amazing coach to our Eagles.

We are looking for parent volunteer who would like to be the coach for Science Olympiad for next year - please email Mrs. Faiza Alam falam@fcps.edu if you are interested.

Check Out What’s Happening in TA!

In celebration of Black History Month, each Friday this month we will be highlighting an extraordinary historical figure. What a way to kick off the month with learning a little more about our new namesake, Katherine Johnson. As a young girl, Katherine loved to learn and counted everything like the steps to church! She wanted to be a Mathematician and set goals for herself to get there. Students today also revisited goals they set earlier this year and reflected on any obstacles they faced or success they found and journaled about that experience. On Wednesday, the 7th graders learned about course selection and electives for next year. While the 7th graders were learning about their opportunities for next year, the 8th graders had a Second Step Lesson where they imagined who they wanted to be in ten years and identified pathways to get there.

Yearbook News

Yes!  We are going to have a yearbook for this school year. Yearbook information and logistics are coming soon.  This will be the last yearbook with the Lanier name, and we want it to be the best it can be.  We are going to need your help in submitting photos once the link is up and running. Stay tuned.
