Dear Cub Run Families,
My name is Natalie Lorenzi, and it is with sincere enthusiasm that I introduce myself to you as your new Principal at Cub Run Elementary. I feel extremely fortunate to have been selected to become a member of this wonderful school community.
I never imagined that my first days as principal would coincide with snow days, and I certainly never imagined starting as principal during a pandemic! Nevertheless, I couldn’t be happier to be joining the Cub Run family, and I look forward to getting to know students, staff, and families over the coming weeks and months.
In pre-pandemic days, I would have introduced myself to you all face-to-face at a Principal Coffee or PTA meeting here at school. Since that isn’t possible yet, I will take this opportunity to tell you a bit about myself. I started my career as a classroom teacher in Fairfax County and later taught at international schools in Trieste, Italy and in Yokohama, Japan. I met my husband in Italy, we were married while living in Japan, and then we moved to Leesburg, where I taught for two years before returning to Fairfax County. Throughout all of these moves, I taught Kindergarten, 1st, 3rd, 4th, and 6th grades. Becoming a second language learner of Italian and seeing my Italian husband learn English, I decided to switch from the classroom to ESOL, where I taught at Hutchison ES and Glen Forest ES for a total of 9 years. When I started writing books for children in 2010, I made a switch once again and became a school librarian. My work as an instructional leader as librarian led me to pursue my path to school administration, which I love. Most recently, I served as the Assistant Principal at Greenbriar East Elementary, where I worked to bring Restorative Justice and equitable, inclusive practices to the school community.
My husband and I have three amazing kids—Teah (21), a senior at Virginia Wesleyan University majoring in Environmental Science, Sofia (18), a freshman at JMU majoring in Social Work, and Jordan (15), a freshman at Patriot High School in Prince William County. We also have a “pandemic puppy,” a sliver lab named Sadie who joined our family at the end of March last year.
I want to thank Jenni Coakley for her leadership and dedication to the Cub Run community over the last twenty years, and I have appreciated the opportunity to learn more about Cub Run from her as I prepared to take on my new role as principal. I am also incredibly grateful to be working with Sheila Sobeski, our Assistant Principal. I have been meeting one-on-one with staff members and introducing myself to Cub Run students in their virtual classrooms, and I welcome the opportunity to connect with parents and guardians, as well.
Throughout my career, a commitment to equity and to promoting diversity has been at the forefront of my work with children and with my colleagues, and I look forward to partnering with Cub Run families and staff to continue the Cub Run tradition of academic excellence and social-emotional well-being for all students. I know that Cub Run is a special place that serves a community with heart, and I am so fortunate to now be a part of this family.
Warmly,
Natalie Lorenzi
Principal, Cub Run ES
