Dear Floris Families,

It is hard to believe that next Monday is the first day of March. The school year is moving quickly and we are heading toward spring. We even enjoyed some spring-like weather this week.

Our Kindergarten students began their concurrent learning this week. Some students are learning 100% virtual and others are participating in hybrid learning. Our youngest Eagles are amazing and we are so proud of them.  All of our kindergarteners have soared this week.

1st and 2nd grade students and families- please remember that next Thursday (3/4) and Friday (3/5) are asynchronous planning days for teachers.

Next Friday is also an FCPS two hour early release. Our students in group 3 and Kindergarten who are in-person will be in-person on Friday and dismissal will begin at 2:15pm. Virtual students will be participating in their classes and synchronous learning until 2:15pm.

Please ask your children to be on the look out for links from their teachers as we begin the change to our new teachers next week. Students will join their new teacher for Morning Meeting on Monday.

Floris will be participating in a fun Spirit Week in celebration of Read Across America. Please see the graphic below. There are reading suggestions and dress up ideas. Tuesday, March 2nd is Read Across America Day. Please take time on Tuesday (and every day) to read with your children. To quote Dr. Seuss himself, "You're never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read to a child."

Have a wonderful weekend,

Read Across America

Suggested Family Resources

February is Black History Month!

Did you know that the National Museum of African American History and Culture offers guidance to parents and caregivers about how to discuss race? Don’t forget to check out their online exhibits as well. Click on the links to learn more.

Watch this section each Friday in February for additional resources.

Tip of the Week

This week's tips come from Amy Albanese, our Advanced Academics Resource Teacher.

It is important to keep all our students actively engaged in their learning.  Presenting students with challenge and rigor is one way we can help foster student engagement in learning.  The National Association for Gifted Children has a great site with tips to keep your children motivated. Please see the link for some great ideas.

https://www.nagc.org/resources-publications/resources-parents/motivation-and-learning

If you’re looking for something the whole family can enjoy, you can try one of these escape room (Breakout EDU) activities.  They are fun and engaging and they really force students to think critically and draw conclusions with very little direct information.  This is a great way to build critical thinking.

For some winter fun try: “Snowman Party” https://platform.breakoutedu.com/game/play/snowman-party-127522-C5USENU3P1

Or if you want to get into the spring spirit try: “Silly Shamrocks” https://platform.breakoutedu.com/game/silly-shamrocks

Enjoy!

Integrity

What does Integrity mean? You are honest and speak the truth. You present yourself genuinely and sincerely. Integrity is doing the right thing when nobody's watching. People with Integrity practice what they preach and maintain a consistent pattern of behavior aligned with their values.

Why does it matter? Integrity is vital to individual growth. It is correlated with a multitude of psychological well-being measures. Harmony in your feelings, thoughts, and actions makes you better able to personally grow and achieve goals.

Integrity Quote of the Week: “Whoever is careless about the truth in small matters cannot be trusted with important matters.” – Albert Einstein

Staff Spotlight

This week's spotlight...

Floris Custodians

Custodians

FCPS Custodian Appreciation Week

Through rain, sleet, or snow, our custodians make sure our schools are safe, steady, and ready to welcome our students.

Yeni, our Building Supervisor, and her team Nancy, Rosi, Hao and Dong are some of the most amazing staff in FCPS. We want to acknowledge the hours that they have put in throughout virtual learning and even more now that we are bringing in more staff and students.

Thank you to our phenomenal Floris custodians!

Be sure to #thankacustodian.
