Self-Regulation Strategy #2: MOVEMENT BREAKS
Self-Regulation also referred to as emotional regulation is the ability to recognize and manage our emotions and behaviors. It is the way we respond to our feelings. It is important for children to learn to manage their emotions, behavior, and body movements when faced with difficult or challenging situations. Self-Regulation strategies can help children become flexible when expectations or routines change and/ or allow them to remain calm when experiencing heightened emotions.
A common self-regulation strategy includes: MOVEMENT BREAKS. Providing short physical movement activities helps to release energy, get the blood flowing, and allows children to relax their bodies and learn to regulate their emotions. (click for examples)
Take the time to support children by practicing and pausing regularly to engage in movement breaks. Encourage children to notice and name how the different movement breaks affect how they feel, think, and behave.
