Ms. Trina Clinkscales and Ms. Honor Hutson are our professional School Counselors at Woodley Hills Elementary and they are invaluable! Throughout the day, they meet with individual children, conduct small group sessions, and teach virtual classroom guidance lessons. During these challenging times they have done a tremendous job of both supporting the emotional and mental health needs of students and by sharing resources with families.

This week is Counselor Appreciation Week. Please send a note or e-mail to let our counselors know how much you appreciate all they do to make Woodley Hills such a special place!

The two major oral health diseases are tooth decay (dental cavities) and gum (periodontal) disease. Both diseases are influenced by nutrition and diet. Nutrition plays an important role in the development of teeth and oral tissue. Dental cavities result from the interaction between the tooth, oral bacteria, and dietary carbohydrates (sugar and starch).

Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that forms on our teeth and turns the sugars and starches in our food into acids. These acids act on the tooth enamel and cause tooth decay. If high-acid producing or sugary foods (raisins, cookies, cakes, potato chips) are consumed, they should be eaten with meals, not as snacks. Cheeses, popcorn, raw fruits and vegetables are low-acid producing food and make healthy snacks.

To prevent dental disease, remember to:

  • Brush teeth after every meal with fluoridated toothpaste.
  • Floss teeth daily.
  • Visit the dentist and dental hygienist regularly.
  • Eat a nutritionally balanced diet.

Avoid foods that stay in the mouth a long time and stick to teeth (raisins, hard candies, and caramels).

Reminder: After School Programs

After school programs are starting!  Students who signed up for a club will receive communications to their FCPS Gmail accounts from the club leaders.  Club leaders will send out an invitation to their Google Classroom and / or a calendar invitation to club with a Google Meet link.  The Craft Lab and the Animals Across the World clubs are full, however you can still sign up for the others!  Please contact or child’s teacher and/ or Theresa Johnson at tmjohnson@fcps.edu , After School Programs Coordinator, with any questions.

Meal Distribution Update: Many Grab and Go Sites Switching to Weekly Meal Kits

Starting this week, many of the FCPS Grab and Go food distribution sites are switching from daily food pickup to weekly Fairfax Meal Kit distribution. Fairfax Meal Kits contain seven days of breakfast, lunch, afternoon snack, and supper (at certain sites) items packed in bulk. The meal kits will be available for pick up every Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. or until supplies are exhausted. Bus route pickups remain unchanged.

Go to the Food Distribution website to see if your meal site is changing.

During January and February, these sites will also be distributing fresh, local fruits and vegetables. Families that pick up no-cost meals will also be provided a fresh fruit or vegetable sourced from a local farm for each child, along with an activity sheet and recipe for that item. The item will vary each week, and will be available on the following dates:

  • February 3, 10, 17

As a reminder, it is important to follow social distancing guidelines. Be sure to stand a minimum of 6 feet apart from others and practice regular hand washing, including prior to leaving a residence to pick-up meals, upon returning home, and before consuming food. Please wear a mask when picking up the meal kits.
