Cav Winter Varsity Sports Updates

Varsity Wrestling

The Cavalier grapplers dropped a nail biter against Marshall last Wednesday 30-27, and also lost to Edison 42-15. Congrats to Wayne Burger, Bradley Brewington and Marshall Caceres, who all recorded two wins on the evening. The Cavs are back in action Saturday morning for the final regular season event against Falls Church and South County.

Boys Varsity Basketball

What a difference a week can make!  This week your Boys Varsity Basketball program came out of the gate ready to go!  On Tuesday night they were back on our home turf playing the West Springfield Spartans. The boys totally rocked the “Red” room with a final score of 59-50. Alex Klein was high scorer of the night with 24 points! He hit three 3’s in the 4th period to seal the fate of the Spartans. Moe Raff was also on his game with 13 points for the night, and Devin Cuviello  had double digits with 10. Xavier Barry, Sinneh Bangura, Brady Lencz and Andre Pacheco all had points on the board. Our rebounding continues to be strong with Brady, Andre, Alex all in for 3 apiece, and Moe and Devin in for 2 total rebounds. It was an exciting game to watch and it’s a great day to be a Cavalier!

Thursday night, we were at Robinson Secondary School, and the boys walked away with a 73-54 win over the Rams. Devin Cuviello was our high scorer of the night with 22 points including four 3’s spread out throughout the four periods!  Moe Raff and Brady Lencz both had 10 points apiece to give us the boost we needed to dominate the boards. Abdul Ahmed, Xavier Barry, Anthony Meaders, Sinneh Bangura, Alex Klein and Andre Pacheco also added to the Cavaliers total score. We were just as hot with our rebounds for the night and again, Devin came in number ONE for 7 total rebounds! Pacheco, Lencz, Stoker, Ahmed, Bangura, Gallagher, Klein, and Raff also helped us to retain custody of that basketball!  Great job boys!

Third times the charm!  Saturday afternoon, your Cavaliers beat the Fairfax Rebels on our home court with a final score of 48-31. Alex Klein and Devin Cuviello walked away with the high scores for the evening, but Rubeel Achekzai, Abdul Ahmed, Brady Lencz, Andre Pacheco, and  Moe Raff all had points on the board. Devin Cuviello, again, led us in rebounds with 7, and Bangura, Barry, Klein, Lencz, Meaders, Pacheco, Raff, Stoker and Schmidt also added to the Cavaliers possessions!  AMazing win this afternoon!  It is always a great day to be a Cavalier!

Girls Varsity Basketball

The Girls Hoops team lost three Patriot District games last week versus West Springfield, Robinson, and Fairfax to close out District play.  The final two contests were very close games going down to the end, with the Robinson game ending with the Rams making a shot with less than two seconds remaining to decide the game.

The Cavs will be back in action this Wednesday, February 3, with a rematch of their final regular season game vs. Fairfax in the Quarterfinals of the Patriot District Tournament at Home in The Red Room. Game is at 5:45 PM and available for livestream viewing.

Varsity Boys Swim and Dive

THU and FRI, 28-29 JAN 2021:  CAV Boys WON the Patriotic District Championship

Congrats to our Boys Team! 4 individual wins, SWEEP of all relays, 1 team record broken, 3 District records broken.  5X District championships!  Great Team meet, working hard to do it again at Regionals!

Varsity Girls Swim and Dive

THU and FRI, 28-29 JAN 2021:  CAV Girls WON the Patriotic District Championship

Congrats to our Girls Team! 4 individual wins, 2 relay wins, 1 team record broken, 1 District record broken.  Great Team meet, working hard to do it again at Regionals!

So...Double Patriot District Championships here in 2020/2021 for all our student-athletes, managers, and coaches representing the Cav Community in Swim and Dive!  A special shout out to our own Head Coach Susie Hamrock for being named “Coach of the Year” and to Kristen Spencer and Stephanie Pollack as her colleagues on the Coaching Staff.

Varsity Rifle

The Woodson Rifle Team shot their last match of the season before regionals this past Saturday, January 30th.  Once again a Woodson athlete claimed the spot as the highest scoring shooter.  Senior  and Captain, Meredith Ivey took that honor shooting a 391.

Her second and third sets of 10 were both 99.  Coming in right behind her in second place was Senior and Captain Nate Wehrlen shooting a 389.  Freshman Ben Hays came in third shooting a 388.  Captain Tori Kopelen was also part of the scoring team and joined fellow teammates Ben Hays, Nate Wehrlen and Meredith Ivey in the top 8 with a score of 384.  Giving up so few points secured another first place win for the Woodson Cavaliers' Rifle team as they head into Regionals.  Also representing their team at this last meet were Senior Joseph Kessler and Juniors Emma Orthman and Justin Mangis.  Like the scoring team these athletes had a strong solid match, ending the season making Woodson proud.

Watch all of Woodson's HOME athletic events on the Woodson Broadcast Studio channel on YouTube. AWAY contests are streamed on the host-schools’ YouTube channels.
