Attendance Matters!

Attendance drives everything! It is tied to almost every aspect of school performance and future outcomes. Please visit the Falls Church High School website attendance page for updated policies and procedures.

Consider these important facts about attendance:

  • If too many absences occur, it is still a problem whether they are excused or unexcused because they represent too much lost learning time in the classroom.
  • By middle and high school, chronic absence is a leading warning sign that a student will drop out.
  • Too many absent students can affect the whole classroom and disrupt instruction.

Avoid absences unless absolutely necessary!

Celebrating our Students!

Our weekly recognition of students who are demonstrating excellence in academics, behavior or citizenship.

  • Hannah Chromicz: Thanks, and kudos to Hannah for her graciousness. I mistakenly called her by another student's nickname until she mentioned it to me last week. Hannah asked to speak with me at the end of Advisory and was so kind as she explained the situation. Thank you, Hannah! – Ms. Harrup
  • Connor Gilster: While only ever having met Connor virtually, he has one of the most calming and chill personas while at the same time demonstrating true concern for others. You can hear the kindness in his voice when he's addressing others during class. Students like Connor help contribute to a safe and comfortable environment for discussion, questioning, and learning. - Mr. Hartman
  • Ingri Amaya-Quintero: Ingri is an excellent digital art student. She has great attendance, participates in the chat, asks for clarification when needed, and always uses all of her class time effectively. Ingri’s digital art skills are really taking off! I always look forward to seeing what she has submitted for her art projects. – Ms. Dreon
  • Estephany Espinoza-Tobar, Mason Le,  Gabyy Martinez-Pineda, Rebecca Pineda, Selena Salisbury: These students in my 5th period chemistry class are awesome! They attend class regularly and join BBCU on time. They participate during class, complete homework, and ask questions when they need help. They all currently have an A or B in chemistry. – Dr. Masciangioli
  • Phu Hong and Rodney Cobbs: Phu and Rodney recently worked together to produce a documentary, "Unlinked," where they examine the effects of COVID-19 on students and educators. They interviewed peers and different adults in the building to build their project. I am impressed by the level of organization, professionalism and skill that both Phu and Rodney showed through this entire process. When you have a minute, check out their work! Kudos...

To Jack Child, Tryn Dunne and Max Miracle for being named Candidates in U.S. Presidential Scholars Program!

Academic Advising

Academic Advising Season has begun. Starting January 2021, students will meet virtually one-on-one with their school counselor to choose their courses for the 2021-22 school year. It is so important that parents and students are informed of their academic options. Families are encouraged to talk with current teachers for their recommendations for next school year. This year, students will choose classes via their SIS Student accounts. After the students choose their courses via their accounts they will meet with their counselor to confirm the selections. Parents can always view the course selections via their SIS Parent account. If you do not have an active account, please contact the Parent Resource Center to obtain a login.

There are numerous ways to stay informed about course selections and graduation requirements, please visit our Academic Advising site for details.

The goal of this time is to ensure that our students are making the best decisions when it comes to course selections. It is not easy to go through a schedule change so it is extremely important for students to choose wisely and be informed about their decisions. After March 12, 2021, requests to change any course selection will be made via the school counselor based on space availability. After June 11, 2021, Falls Church Student Services cannot honor any requests to change elective courses so it is vital that students choose wisely. Please speak with your student’s school counselor if you have any questions or reach out to Jessica Grenfell, jmgrenfell@fcps.edu.

PSAT Opportunity for 10th Grade Students in April

In April, Falls Church High School tenth graders will have the opportunity to take the Preliminary SAT 10 (PSAT 10). General information about the test is available on the PSAT 10 testing update webpage, and we will share more specifics about PSAT 10 testing in the coming weeks. Final testing decisions will be based on health department guidance.

Students with disabilities who have testing accommodations documented in a 504 Plan or an individualized education program (IEP) may be eligible for testing accommodations on the PSAT 10; however, the College Board must approve a formal request for each student. If the student already has College Board accommodations approved from a previous PSAT 10, SAT, or AP test, then no further action is needed. The PSAT Accommodations Process webpage provides additional information, including accommodations input and consent forms.

English learners (ELs), as defined by state or federal policy, are eligible for testing supports on the PSAT 10. Unlike accommodations for students with disabilities, EL supports are temporary and can only be used on the test date for which they have been requested. The PSAT EL Supports Process webpage provides additional information, including accommodations input and consent forms.

To request new College Board accommodations and/or temporary EL supports, parents and guardians should return the corresponding input and consent forms to the school by February 12, 2021

If you have questions about PSAT accommodations or testing supports, please contact us at masuqi@fcps.edu.

When returning input and consent forms for accommodations or EL supports, deliver to:
