CWES Weekly Happenings

From the Principal's Desk

snow

Dear Families,

FCPS has announced the following operating status for tomorrow:

Virtual Learning for All Students, Division Operations are Open, School Building Work Spaces are Not Available

This means CWES students will have their typical Morning Meeting and asynchronous Monday, but our office will be closed, and Picture Day is cancelled. Please sign up for another time slot later this week below.

There is something magical about snow, isn’t there? I took this photo on the path behind my house today, as the first month of this new year ends. Walking through the snowy woods reminds me that nature is always there, dependably variable. As surely as we have peaceful cold today, we will have sunny warm days this spring. Groundhog Day is this Tuesday – whether or not it takes six more weeks to get there, spring weather is coming. And with spring comes hope.

We look forward to bringing some K-2 students into the building this week, beginning our Engagement Intervention Program this Thursday. It is a very small step towards a new phase in this unique school year. You might be concerned that students are behind, that schools are facing an unprecedented achievement gap. Students' needs will indeed be different, and I think it is important not to make assumptions and judgments about those differences, but rather to approach them with inquiry and curiosity. The gap I am most concerned about closing is one of understanding--the gap between what schools knew and what we will need to know now in order to serve children well in 2021. What can these first in-person encounters teach us? What aspects of the school experience will bring challenges and opportunities? What gifts will students bring us from the time they have spent learning virtually, having deepened their relationships in a smaller circle of family and friends? Surely they will bring the gifts of resilience and technological savvy, and perhaps also new approaches to independent work, to collaboration, and to learning itself. There will be new inspirations for their creativity, their engagement, and their motivation. There will be new fears and anxieties, as well as new hopes and dreams. We will make new plans to promote movement, cooperation, and social connection while keeping them safe and healthy.

Our teachers have done incredible work remaking their approaches around your children’s needs and will continue to do so, whether your child accesses their instruction from home or school setting. Our teachers are learning about concurrent instruction and ways to leverage technology to create community across virtual and in-person contexts. Rest assured that what our teachers do best is assess and address student needs – they learn about their students and craft experiences that will benefit them – day in and day out. The school board meeting this Tuesday will bring additional clarity about the changes in store. And your children's needs will order our next steps.

This week we celebrate Becca Wilson and Brian Tingley for National School Counselor Week and thank them for safeguarding the emotional health of our students, whatever the circumstance, whatever the season.

Have a wonderful, wintry week.

Warm regards,

Diane Leipzig, Dr. L

Health Screening Commitment Form Required for In-Person Students

As students return to school, parents/caregivers will be asked to acknowledge a Health Screening Commitment form before a student may return to the school buildings. This document confirms that a parent/caregiver/guardian will complete a daily health screening and will keep students home when they are ill.

The Health Commitment form can be submitted electronically through in ParentVUE (PVUE), or via hard copy. Please contact our office if you need a hard copy.

Middle School Updates: Feb. 2 and 3

Rising 7th Grade Parent and Student Math Night – Tuesday, February 2nd from 6:30-7:30

Do you still have questions about the math sequence of courses or specific courses available at grade 7?  Are you still undecided about the course that is best for your child?  Ms. Hornbecker and math teachers from Frost Middle School will be available for a brief overview and to answer individual questions.  You can access the event using this link:  https://us.bbcollab.com/guest/29a43c540b1b4a91a8f0644b94fa9ead

All parents and students are encouraged to attend regardless of which middle school the student is attending, as the information applies to math courses FCPS-wide.

Rising 7th Grade Special Education Services Parent Information Night – Wednesday February 3rd at 6:30 at this link.

Please join us to hear general information related to special education services at the middle school.  We will also meet and hear from teacher leaders from the adapted curriculum, as well as our specialized programs of the Comprehensive Services Site (CSS) and the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) program.

Sixth Grade Fun!

The 6th grade team is now offering a weekly Friday Lunch Bunch from 12:15-12:45. This is open to any 6th grade student and will be hosted by a different teacher each week. Students will have a chance to socialize with their classmates, play games, and see friends from other classes. If your student is interested in joining this lunch bunch, they can ask their teacher for more details.

It's almost time to order 6th grade T-shirts – a yearly tradition to commemorate students’ final year in elementary school. Your student’s teacher will be sending out more information about this soon, including a link to purchase the shirt. Each shirt will be $13 and available in both youth and adult sizes. We will also have an option to make a donation to cover shirts for students who need financial assistance, as well as the cost of staff shirts. Keep an eye out for further information and reach out to your child’s teacher with any questions.
