February 1 – 5

coun

National School Counseling Week, sponsored by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career.

FCPS employs close to 700 school counseling professionals, including school counselors, directors of student services, and career center specialists. These professionals are committed to preparing students to become lifelong learners and productive members in a global society with a focus on social emotional wellness, academic success, and college and career readiness. Thank you to all of our school counseling professionals Ms. Carrie, Ms. Kim, Mrs. Mourning, and Mrs. Turner for the tremendous work they do!

Inclement Weather

Check the FCPS website for information about school closures and changes to virtual learning during inclement weather.

Student Laptop

Microsoft License

Your child may receive a message on his or her laptop that Windows or Microsoft Office license is about to expire. WHen students are at Poe, these licenses would be automatically updated when you log into the computer on the school’s Fairfax wifi network.

You may resolve the issue by coming to Poe (or any FCPS school near you) and getting close enough to the building to pick up the Fairfax wifi network.

  • Start the computer and log in and stay logged in for five minutes
  • Restart the computer and log in again.

It is preferred that you do this once a month for the remainder of Virtual Learning.

Attendance:  Marked CUT

Participation and engagement in a virtual environment are essential to student learning.  In order to facilitate conversations about student achievement, Poe Middle School will be utilizing CUT, a mark in SIS attendance, to show instances where students do not participate.

  •  A student logging into class who never gives any indication of their presence during class.
  • Never responds, in any fashion, when called on. Student is given at least 3 opportunities to respond during different times of the period.
  •  Is still logged on after class ends, without ever participating.

All CUTs, ghosting, or logging off without permission will be tracked on SIS and teachers will notify parents and administrators.

2021-2022 Course Selections:

Planning for the 2021-2022 school year has begun. Beginning early February and throughout the month of March, Poe school counselors will review course selection google forms and meet with students for academic advising sessions. Students are encouraged to select courses based on teacher feedback, progress in current courses, academic strengths, and personal interests.  During this time, they will discuss the student’s course selections and answer any questions they may have.  The 2021-2022 Course Descriptions and Guide are now available on the Poe Middle School website here.
