Weyanoke Update for January 27, 2021

Woodchuck Day is Coming!

It's almost time to celebrate a very special holiday for Weyanoke: Groundhog Day! The groundhog is also known as a woodchuck and is our official school mascot. Every year we celebrate by doing fun activities and learning about the woodchuck. Help us celebrate on Tuesday, February 2.

Congratulations, Ms. Usher and Ms. Dembo!

Awards 2021

January 24-30 is Principal's Appreciation Week

This week is Virginia School Principals Appreciation Week, and we have so much to be thankful for at Weyanoke Elementary! Ms. Usher and Ms. Doyle have worked tirelessly for almost a full year to keep our school, staff and students going during this challenging time.

Ms. Usher was recently selected as the Region 2 Principal of the Year by FCPS. The award announcement said, "Her advocacy for her school and her belief in her students is an inspiration to all." We knew she was amazing, and it is great to know that others agree.

Ms. Doyle is our Assistant Principal, whose positivity and dedication are priceless as we work hard to keep our students and families connected in many ways.

Thank you, Principals!

Return to School DRAFT Dates

Dr. Brabrand and the FCPS Leadership Team have drafted new Return to School dates. On February 2, 2021, Superintendent Brabrand will share these dates, along with his Return to School Plan, during a School Board Work Session. The Return to School dates that apply to Weyanoke ES are as follows:

  • Ms. Hyatt's Class - February 16
  • Preschool and Kindergarten – February 23
  • Grades 1 & 2 – March 9
  • Grades 3, 4, and 5 – March 16

More information about these transitions back into the building for those that chose the hybrid return to the building model will be forthcoming after the February 2 school board meeting.

Meal Distribution Update: Many Grab and Go Sites Switching to Weekly Meal Kits

Starting this week, many of the FCPS Grab and Go food distribution sites are switching from daily food pickup to weekly Fairfax Meal Kit distribution. Fairfax Meal Kits contain seven days of breakfast, lunch, afternoon snack, and supper (at certain sites) items packed in bulk. The meal kits will be available for pick up every Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. or until supplies are exhausted. Bus route pickups remain unchanged.

Go to the Food Distribution website to see if your meal site is changing.

During January and February, these sites will also be distributing fresh, local fruits and vegetables. Families that pick up no-cost meals will also be provided a fresh fruit or vegetable sourced from a local farm for each child, along with an activity sheet and recipe for that item. The item will vary each week, and will be available on the following dates:

  • January 27
  • February 3, 10, 17

As a reminder, it is important to follow social distancing guidelines. Be sure to stand a minimum of 6 feet apart from others and practice regular hand washing, including prior to leaving a residence to pick-up meals, upon returning home, and before consuming food. Please wear a mask when picking up the meal kits.

Health Screening Commitment Form Required Prior to Student Return to School Buildings

As students return to school, parents/caregivers will be asked to acknowledge a Health Screening Commitment form before their student(s) return to school buildings. This document confirms that a parent/caregiver/guardian will complete a daily health screening and will keep their students home when they are ill.

The Health Commitment form can be submitted electronically through in ParentVUE (PVUE) or via hard copy. Please contact your child’s school to have a hard copy sent to you.
