Cav Winter Varsity Sports Updates

Varsity Wrestling

The Cavalier wrestling team was in action Friday night taking on Fairfax HS and Thomas Jefferson. The Cavs dropped the dual to Fairfax 44-22, however defeated Thomas Jefferson 36-22.  The Cavs are back in action Wednesday night as they host George C. Marshall HS and Thomas Edison HS. Bradley Brewington continued his undefeated season with a pin and win by forfeit.

Boys Varsity Basketball

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar once said, “You can’t win unless you learn how to lose,” and this week the Boys Varsity Basketball team had two tough losses on the road. Wednesday they fell to a strong South County team with a score of 85-52. Abdul Ahmed was the high scorer with 15 points. Moe Raff had 9 with a sweet three pointer in the third period. Xavier Barry, Devin Cuviello, Sinneh Bangura, Anthony Meaders, Brady Lencz, Jack Gallagher, Alex Klein, and Andre Pacheco all helped the points total for the night. It just wasn’t enough for the strong SoCo offensive led by Andre Speight.

Saturday night the boys fell to the Hayfield Hawks with a final score of 56-51. At one point in the third period the Cavs were ahead, but it was short-lived even though they fought hard throughout the game. Devin Cuviello and Alex Klein were our top scorers for the night with 10 points apiece. Moe, Andre, Abdul, Xavier, Brady, Sinneh, and Anthony all added points to the board. This week the team will battle West Springfield on 1/26/21 at home, Robinson on 1/28/21 AT Robinson, and Fairfax on Saturday 1/30/21 back in the Red Room. All home games can be viewed on your Woodson Broadcast Studio YouTube channel.

Girls Varsity Basketball

On Wednesday, January 20, the Cavaliers hosted South County and defeated their conference rival 44-29. Anna Wiggins led all scorers with 15 points, and Sabina Niedrick and Eunice Yoon both contributed 8 points. A balanced attack was rounded out with Allie Maahs scoring 7 points and Levi Weinberger with 6 points. Great defensive energy and pressure contributed to the victory.

The Cavs finished the week with a road loss against Lake Braddock 54-28 on Friday, January 22. Sabina Niedrick led with 9 points and Anna Wiggins contributed 7 points during a poor shooting night. The hot shooting of Lake Braddock became insurmountable as they led start to finish. The Cavaliers look forward to the end of conference play with 3 games left before the postseason.

Varsity Boys Swim and Dive

FRI, 22 JAN 2021 CAV Boys won versus Robinson Secondary

Varsity Girls Swim and Dive

FRI, 22 JAN 2021 CAV Girls won versus Robinson Secondary

Coaches Susie Hamrock, Kristen Spencer, and Stephanie Pollack led our amazing CAV Swim and Dive athletes to an undefeated regular season with a 5-0 record! It was so fantastic celebrating our Seniors and their parents on Friday night during our meet against Robinson! Thanks to our awesome Boosters for the wonderful banners, we were able to present to each Senior! Thanks again to our great Livestreaming team! Thanks to our amazing officials and parent timers all season!

The postseason Championship meets start with Districts this coming weekend!

The district dive meet is on Friday, Jan. 29th during the day.

The girls district swim meet with timed finals will be Friday, Jan. 29th starting at 5:30pm.

The boys district swim meet with timed finals will be Sat., Jan. 30th starting at 5:30pm.

We salute and thank the following 2020/2021 CAV Senior Swim and Dive team members for all of their training, commitment, and dedication in service to Woodson:

Girls Swimmers: Alex Burns, Selah Dean, Abby Deer, Emilee Ferrari, Emma Larson, Ai Vy Le, Adeline Muras, Victoria Sprance, Naomi White;  Girls Divers – Minh Donnell

Boys Swimmers: Mikey D'Alessandro, Aiden Kane, Mitchell Kerr, Max Koerner, Eric Lundgren, Kaden McCall, Alex Micheli, David Muniz, Nick Parker, Patrick Read; Boys Divers - Aidan Thomas, Sean Binning

Swim and Dive Manager – Teddy Geis

Varsity Rifle

The rifle team had another strong showing at their 3rd of 4 matches on Saturday, January 23rd.  Although these matches find the team competing against all the other teams in the region during the day-long match series, each relay finds two teams shooting side by side.  This past weekend Woodson shot along Robinson.  Robinson had the lead during the first round of shots with a combined score of 383 to Woodson's 381. The second round of 10 found Woodson's scoring team shooting a 383 and Robinson a 381.  The third round is where Robinson took the lead with nine points.  Woodson's scoring team dominated in the 4th round shooting a 385, the highest scoring round of the entire day.  It was strong, but Robinson held to their first place spot for the day with Woodson just 7 points below them in second place.  Freshman Ben Hays led the scoring team, shooting a 390 and securing the spot as the top athlete for the day.  Junior Rose McClelland joined her teammate in the top 8 in 4th position with a score of 384.  Seniors Meredith Ivey and Junior Victoria Cross helped their team hold that strong second place spot.  Seniors Yannie Chang and Kian Salinsky also represented Woodson both bringing in strong scores.

Victoria Kopelen has signed with the University of Nebraska rifle team to become one of the newest Woodson athletes to sign to a Division 1 school.  Tori is one of three incoming freshman to sign to the Huskers team of 10 athletes for 2021-2022.  Tori's teammates and coaches could not be more proud of her.  This is well deserved.  Last season, Tori and her Woodson teammates broke a league record during the season.  Over the summer, she and teammates outside of the Woodson, set a Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) National Record in the junior club category.  Not only does Tori shine on the range, but she is a leader as well.  She developed and delivered captain talks for her teammates to help keep them motivated and growing in the sport.  She regularly offers guidance on skills to help her teammates and has taken the NRA coaching classes.  Nebraska is fortunate to call Tori Kopelen a Husker and Woodson rifle has been fortunate to have such a talented Cavalier.

Watch all of Woodson's HOME athletic events on the Woodson Broadcast Studio channel on YouTube. AWAY contests are streamed on the host-schools’ YouTube channels.
