Community Corner - Equity

Supporting your Child's Transition to Concurrent Learning

(in-person and virtual learning)

Parents have a complicated mission of supporting their child with dealing with anxiety and uncertainty: reassuring children that it’s safe to be away from them, while also encouraging them to be careful and preparing them to be flexible in case the situation changes. How do you do that?  Here are some pointers - Back to School Anxiety During Covid

Here are some additional books and videos that you can view with your child as you prepare to have conversations about the transition to concurrent learning - Feelings and Mindfulness Videos and Books

The goal of the equity team is to promote institutional change within the organization in order to better serve the community.

The Equity Team’s Role is to…

  1. Provide leadership for creating a culturally responsive work environment.
  2. Assess the needs of our school as whole, as it relates to both past, present, and future race and equity work.
  3. Lead staff in researching and developing/improving plans for ongoing Culturally Responsive Professional Development.
  4. Help to create a supportive learning environment whereby staff, students, and families can have ongoing courageous conversations.

art supplies

Greetings from the Art Room

Gunston Students will  be creating COLLAGE ARTWORKS (cut and glue paper art).  We began working with collage materials this week.

Please make sure your child has their own personal art supplies to work with during Art class through the months of January and February.  They will need the following supplies, and the supplies should be kept in a bag for use during each weekly art class.

  • Construction Paper (variety of colors)
  • Child Size Scissors
  • Glue Stick
  • Sketchbook of white paper (the same book/paper they have been using for drawing)
  • Bag to hold all supplies/cut papers together between art classes

*NOTE: A small baggie of construction papers was given to each student with other supplies during laptop distribution at the beginning of the year.  Scissors and glue sticks are on the student grade level supply list.  The local dollar store also carries supplies.  If you are still in need of supplies, please contact Mrs. Gorham at ahgorham@fcps.edu.

Thank you so much!

Food Distribution Continues

Gunston Elementary is a bulk meal kit site. Families can pick up meals every Wednesday from 8:00am - 12:30pm.  Meals in January and February  will include fruits and vegetables from local farms.  (January 27, February 3, February 10 & February 17)

Gunston also continues to distribute breakfast and lunch each day at the school from 12:13pm - 12:23 pm.
