Dear Family Fairfax,

A semester into this unusual school year, and we still cannot believe it went by so quickly.  On Tuesday at our PTSA meeting, my principal’s report included much of what I shared last week, but I also mentioned our current thinking on possible graduation plans if conditions allow (football field) and the upcoming new online platform for student and class information, Schoology.  Set to launch next year, this will provide the online, one-stop shop that so many of our students have been requesting.

Further down in this message, you will find a list of our 31 Students of the Quarter.  In conjunction with the Fairfax City Rotary, our staff now has the opportunity to nominate students each quarter, with subschools selecting finalists to celebrate with our Rotary Club.  We hope this provides another avenue to celebrate our students over the years, and a special thank you to our Rotary partners for initiating this opportunity for Fairfax High School.

Return to School tentative plans are in place, and for your calendar, grades 9 and 12 in-person students should return on March 2nd.  Grades 10 and 11 in-person students should return on March 9th.  I will host town halls the week of February 23rd for students and parents to answer questions, show images of the building with its mitigation strategies firmly in place, and more.  Please be on the lookout for dates and times to sign up soon.  We are also planning to welcome our other extracurricular and co-curricular activities as soon as January 26th!

As I write, we have Swim and Dive setting up their Senior Night and drive by event, and we have both of our basketball teams celebrating tomorrow.  It is hard to believe it, but with our abbreviated season, we are beginning District play this week.  For our athletes and activities students and parents, as “competition” continues this year, please remember that health and safety is and will always be the priority.  If you/your student is/are sick, stay home.  While we all understand the importance and individual commitments of and on a team, we more understand the importance of empathy and understanding when trying to compete in the midst of a pandemic.  We are all worried about the emotional toll this pandemic is taking on our students, so we don’t want for a student who isn’t well or who gets sick to believe it is their fault if a team or activity doesn’t compete.  It simply isn’t.  We are a family, and we look out for each other and lift each other up higher when times are good and in the really low moments in life.  Please join me in that message to our students.

It looks like cold weather is rolling in next week--please stay safe and warm!

All the best,

Erin

"We Are the Voices"

I am so excited to announce that we will have our first ever All-FCPS virtual choir premiere next week, Wednesday at 7pm. They will be singing a piece called “We Are The Voices.” It is approximately 12 minutes in length and will air on Wednesday, January 27th at 7:00 PM on channel 21 and 25. Click on the link below for more information and how to view. FCCDA – We are the Voices

There are interviews from students, adults, and the composer about the importance of music for our students, and all of us during this challenging time. It features over 300 FCPS secondary choral students, and has several singers from Fairfax HS! This project is the first time we have had a collaboration of this sort through the entire county, and it was coordinated by our own, Juliana Woodill. Bravo singers!

Free STEM Programs for 9th Graders

BLAST

Building Leaders for Advancing Science and Technology (BLAST) is a FREE educational program of the Virginia Space Grant Consortium, designed to ignite a passion in students who already show an interest in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Our hope is that the BLAST 3-day residential, on-campus experience, which is packed with demonstrations and collaborative activities led by college faculty, will inspire students to envision a career in a STEM field and motivate them to expand the number of STEM-related classes they take in higher grade levels.

Applications are being accepted online through Monday, February 8th.

Tech Update

We have seen an increase in the number of computer incidents resolved by students restarting their FCPS issued laptop. A technology team member has emailed all students this week with a message to remind them to restart their computer daily by selecting restart from the menu. A reminder that closing the lid of the computer is not a restart. Please help your student remember to restart their laptop daily.

If a student continues to have challenges, please use the Student/Parent hotline (833-921-3277) or enter a ticket in the Parent/Student Tech Support Portal.
