Technology Corner
January Technology Tips for Parents
One big lesson of tech is that there is never just one way to do something. Shortcuts and tricks abound and can be super helpful. Here are a few.
Shortcuts in Chrome.
- Ctrl+h to open your Chrome browser history
- F1 opens Chrome Help in a new tab
- Ctrl+Shift+T opens the last tab closed (my favorite)
- Ctrl+N opens a new window
- Ctrl+0 returns everything to default size (ctrl+ + for bigger, ctrl+ - for smaller)
- Tab moves between clickable boxes on the page
-
And the most used - Ctrl+c, Ctrl+v
FInd many many more here. Choose just one or two to get started.
Try some of these helpful techniques for more efficient searching in Google:
- Use tilde (~) before a word to include any synonyms of something you are searching. Examples: ~gifts pulls up presents, trinkets and shopping ideas ~pasta also pulls up noodles and spaghetti
- Put a dash (also known as a minus sign) before any words you want left out of a search. I frequently use -pinterest before searches so I don’t pull up anything from a site that I don’t use.
- Use quotation marks around a whole phrase or full name in a certain order to search so it doesn’t just find the individual words. Example: “John Z. Smith” or “apples and oranges”

Top laptop troubleshooting go-tos:
- Restart/reboot your computer
- Ask a friend or parent
- Google the issue
- And for FCPS laptops put in a ticket (info on front page of Gunston website)
Most of the time you can solve your issue with one of these techniques.
Digital technology is great, but make sure to take time away from it too. Play outside or turn on some music and get out some playdough.

Greetings from the Art Room
|
Gunston Students will be creating COLLAGE ARTWORKS (cut and glue paper art). We began working with collage materials this week.
Please make sure your child has their own personal art supplies to work with during Art class through the months of January and February. They will need the following supplies, and the supplies should be kept in a bag for use during each weekly art class.
- Construction Paper (variety of colors)
- Child Size Scissors
- Glue Stick
- Sketchbook of white paper (the same book/paper they have been using for drawing)
- Bag to hold all supplies/cut papers together between art classes
*NOTE: A small baggie of construction papers was given to each student with other supplies during laptop distribution at the beginning of the year. Scissors and glue sticks are on the student grade level supply list. The local dollar store also carries supplies. If you are still in need of supplies, please contact Mrs. Gorham at ahgorham@fcps.edu.
Thank you so much!
