Did You KnowNorth Carolina Journal of Medicine article on The Impact of Social Media on Youth Mental Health highlights the risk and benefits of social media. “Over the past two decades, new media have established an increasingly central presence in the lives of youth, presenting both new challenges and new opportunities. As the presence of new media only continues to grow, it will be essential to develop evidence-based approaches for encouraging healthy social media use in youth, and to effectively utilize these tools for mental health screening and intervention.” Here is the full article.

Service Opportunities

The upcoming Martin Luther King Jr. holiday on January 18, 2021 is a great opportunity for students to honor the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. while engaging in impactful service opportunities.

In an effort to connect student service learning with the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.’s work, we encourage you to visit the Langley High School website, Service Learning page, at https://langleyhs.fcps.edu/student-life-activities/service-learning .  Scroll to the section entitled “Winter 2020-2021 Updates” for online opportunities, writing and art opportunities, and hands-on opportunities.

In addition, FCPS and Neighborhood and Community Services (NCS) is teaming up with Volunteer Fairfax for a weekend of service. Beginning on January 16, 2021, Volunteer Fairfax is organizing a family friendly event that will provide service opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to participate in activities virtually from home. To learn more about the MLK Jr. Weekend of Service and the specific service activities, please visit Volunteer Fairfax’s website for more information.

And, finally, the 59th Presidential Inaugural Committee is also hosting a National Day of Service.  Visit their website at https://bideninaugural.org/day-of-service/  to register to volunteer or pledge to volunteer in a number of different virtual opportunities.

Given COVID restrictions, parents may serve as the supervising adult and can verify service; students then submit an entry on x2Vol for approval of the service hours.   Questions, contact Betsy Shomaker, LHS Service Learning Liaison, at enshomaker@fcps.edu

The PTSA's Summer Opportunities Committee needs your help! This new committee is working to develop resources to help Saxons find internships, jobs or other summer enrichment experiences, especially following students' sophomore and junior years. Working with our College and Career Services Office, the committee aims to contribute to a database of opportunities and launch skills-building sessions for students.

Click here for a survey and share your ideas and any contacts or resources you may have, as well as your student's level of interest in this initiative. Thanks for helping us help our students!

Action Requested: Help save trees and FCPS $$ on postage by opting in to receive “Paperless” Report Cards (that can be printed through ParentVUE)

Parents/Guardians may opt into “Go Paperless” for report cards by following the below instructions:

  • Parents/Guardians can take advantage of the paperless option, by logging into ParentVUE, then going to “My Account” and selecting "Go Paperless!". This is the only way to keep a paper report card from being generated for students at the secondary level. All parents who share the same address as the student must have a SIS ParentVUE account and must select the paperless option.
