Weyanoke Update for January 13, 2021

Health Screening Commitment Form Required Prior to Student Return to School Buildings

As students return to school, parents/caregivers will be asked to acknowledge a Health Screening Commitment form before their student(s) return to school buildings. This document confirms that a parent/caregiver/guardian will complete a daily health screening and will keep their students home when they are ill.

The Health Commitment form can be submitted electronically through in ParentVUE (PVUE) beginning January 4, or via hard copy. Please contact your child’s school to have a hard copy sent to you.

Family Life Education Preview Night

Weyanoke will be hosting a Family Life Education Preview Night on Tuesday, January 26th from 6:00 - 7:00 p.m. on BBCU when parents and guardians of K-5 students can preview the FLE curriculum.  FLE includes both Human Growth and Development (HGD) and Emotional and Social Health (ESH) units.  Classroom teachers will notify parents/guardians of the exact dates and times of the FLE and FLE opt-out lessons.  The BBCU guest link to the preview night will also be sent to the parents via email or Talking Points a week prior to the event.

New Deadline for Advanced Academics Parent Survey

Weyanoke is proud to be a school that offers a variety of educational programming and opportunities for our students. We’re excited to share that the school administration, teachers, and staff are exploring an expansion of the advanced academics program (AAP) for the 2021-2022 school year to include Level IV services!

As part of our multi-step plan, we are asking for feedback from our community regarding these opportunities and your perspectives on how this change might affect our school.

Please take some time prior to January 14, 2021 to complete the following survey. Your feedback and insight are critical in assisting our teams in developing a plan that will best serve the needs of our families and students!

Notification of WIDA Testing

Federal legislation requires that all students identified as English learners (ELs) participate annually in an English language proficiency assessment. In Virginia, all divisions use the WIDA ACCESS for ELLs to monitor students' progress in acquiring academic English. The WIDA ACCESS for ELLs is administered to all students in grades K-12 with an English language proficiency (ELP) level of 1-5 and 9. The WIDA ACCESS for ELLs is aligned with the WIDA English language development standards and assesses English in the four language domains of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The assessment will:

  • Determine students’ English language proficiency level and eligibility for English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) services and testing accommodations.
  • Help students and families understand students’ current level of English language proficiency along a developmental continuum.
  • Provide teachers with information they can use to plan for and support student learning.
  • Determine whether ELs have met English language proficiency criteria and will be designated former ELs.

All ELs, including those who have opted out of ESOL services, participate annually in the ELP assessment until they reach English language proficiency criteria (ELP level 6). Alternate assessment formats are available for certain students with disabilities. If you have questions about the annual ELP assessment, please contact Michelle Doyle for more information at (703) 813-5400.

weCare@school ~ Parents Updating Health Information

An email went out to parents asking them to review and submit the Health Information Form (HIF) in weCare@school. Below is the information for parents to follow:

Health Information in the Emergency Care form provides valuable information regarding student health conditions. This information is critical in identifying students who may need healthcare support while at school or on the bus. Parents/guardians are reminded that they can provide this information online via their FCPS 24-7 (Blackboard) accounts within the weCare@school module.

NOTE: If you have updated your child’s information in school year 2020-2021, it is not necessary to resend the Emergency Care Form.

To review your child’s Health Information

  • Login to FCPS 24-7 Parent View
  • Click on the weCare@school link
  • Click on plus sign beside the student's name and choose:
    • Current Health Conditions
      • Choose “Yes” for “Does your child have a health condition that require support at school?” This will open where the parent can make updates that will transfer to the Health Information Form for the PHN to review.

    • If a parent needs to make changes to the Medical Information on File, they will need to contact the school. The school will contact the PHN. This is for the child’s safety.
