Dear Justice Families,
As you may already know, at the January 5th School Board meeting, it was decided to pause the plan to bring students and staff back into the building. What this means is that we will not be returning to in-person school on January 26 (9th and 12th grade) or February 9 (for 10th and 11th grade) as previously scheduled. This decision impacts the following dates:
- We will NOT be starting a new bell schedule on January 12. This is because we will not be transporting students to school during the pause in our plan.

January 13th and 14th Town Halls have been postponed. New dates will be communicated as soon as the information becomes available. In the meantime, a detailed in-person safety plan will be sent to parents eNotify email early next week.

January 19th and 21st are now regular synchronous days. These days were previously scheduled as asynchronous days to provide teachers with preparation time. When we move closer to students and staff returning for in person instruction in school buildings, we will need to provide preparation days for teachers. We will communicate those dates once we confirm return to school dates in the future.
- As previously shared, Monday, January 11 will remain an independent (asynchronous) learning day for students and a teacher preparation day.
- The next update on the Return to School plan to the School Board is scheduled for February 2nd.

Freshman & New Student Orientations - Due to the pause of in-person instruction we need to postpone our freshmen and new student orientation. We will share new dates and information about the orientation as soon as we’re able.

In the meantime, the extra time has allowed us to continue to focus on safety measures as well as continuing professional development for concurrent instruction.
We have some really great news to share. We have two new team members to the Justice Family, Bryant "Niko" Centeno-Monroy and Meron Estafanos. Mr. Centeno-Monroy is joining us as Justice's first career coach for students looking at industry certification paths. Ms. Estafanos is our ESOL counselor and will be with us through the end of the school year while Ms. Collazos is on leave. More information about them is below.
Finally, as we slowly begin to process what happened in our nation’s capital last week, many students have wanted to talk, express their feelings, and make sense. I shared some guidance, as well as resources, to support our teachers in how they might address students’ questions or concerns. Our teachers have always done an amazing job. As educators, our charge is to ensure that we provide a safe, supportive, and welcoming environment that encourages inquiry and critical thinking.

 We are excited to announce a new colleague and partnership position with NOVA and Justice High School; the Career Coach -- Bryant "Niko" Centeno-Monroy. The Career Coach position will be a full-time employee of NOVA and will be the primary liaison between NOVA and Justice High School for student services. Mr. Centeno-Monroy will work with individual students by assisting them in developing individualized career plans leading to associate degrees or industry certifications, collaborating with faculty and staff at both NOVA and Justice High School, and establishing program interventions aimed at student goal attainment.
Mr. Centeno-Monroy is a career educator who has spent the last 7 years working in various leadership capacities serving students and families from the Las Vegas Valley. During this time, he has taught English Language Arts, Financial Literacy, Life Skills, and College Access support. While in Las Vegas, Mr. Centeno-Monroy earned his Masters of Education in Curriculum and Instruction at The University of Las Vegas Nevada and prior to doing so earned his Bachelors in History and Social Justice at Virginia Commonwealth University. When Mr. Centeno-Monroy parents first immigrated to the United States, they settled in Culmore and attended Justice, where they met and had him not long afterwards. He is excited to get back to his parents first home community and is ready to serve and empower both students and families. In his spare time, Mr. Centeno-Monroy loves spending time with his family and his dog, Shadow, creating music on the side, and training for future marathons and races. Please welcome Mr. Centeno-Monroy to the Justice Family!

We are also extremely happy to announce Meron Estefanos joined Student Services as the long-term sub for Vanessa Collazos. Ms. Estefanos will be handling the ESOL Level 1 students and working collaboratively with the ESOL Department.
Ms. Estafanos is from Eritrea, a small country in East Africa. She is fluent in English and Tigrinya and conversational in Spanish. She is a recent graduate of George Mason University earning a M.A. in School Counseling and interned for both FCPS and APS. Previously, she has received her M.A. in Sociology with a concentration in gender based violence from The George Washington University. At Howard University, Ms. Estafanos was a double major earning a B.A. in History and Sociology. She enjoys reading, traveling, and 90’s hip-hop. Please join me in welcoming Ms. Estafanos to the Justice Family!
Parking passes for in-person students are free this year. We currently have 140 student parking spaces available: 70 on T/W and 70 on Th/F. In-person seniors will have the first opportunity to apply for a parking space, and juniors will be permitted to apply for any remaining spots. Here is the timeline for the process:

Senior Portraits - Justice High School 20-21
We are offering one final day to be photographed for your senior portraits. This day will be Tuesday, January 12th from 3:00-9:00pm.
This year we will not be assigning an appointment time to each senior. Due to safety concerns and the need to limit the number of students photographed each day, seniors will be required to go online to prestigeportraits.com to select and confirm their appointment times. You can also call the Lifetouch Customer Service team at 800-445-1189 to confirm an appointment.
*Please note: Lifetouch will not be accepting any walk-ups this year so everyone must confirm online.
Unfortunately, the no-charge yearbook sitting is not listed as an option in the online system. However, students wanting the no-charge yearbook sitting can select the Basic sitting level online and will not need to pay the sitting fee. The system will hold their appointment and they can simply advise the team when they arrive for their session that they want the no-charge sitting.
Dress code: Your safety is our highest priority. To follow safety protocol, we will not be providing shared garments for portraits. Instead, we ask that you follow the dress code. Senior portraits are a more formal picture. Solid colored dress shirts/tops work well for the camera; jackets and ties are optional. Please avoid any shirts with text or graphics on them. Note that if your image does NOT meet these specifications, you will have to get another photograph that meets the requirements by the deadline January 28th or you will not be pictured in the yearbook.

Dress Code:
BACKGROUND: Photos must be shot on a solid background. (we recommend blue)
POSE: Head and shoulder shots ONLY. Hands should not be visible. No hats. No sport team logos. No props (i.e. sport equipment, toys, wigs, benches, chairs, etc.).
DRESS: Senior portraits are a more formal picture. Solid colored dress shirts/tops work well for the camera; jackets and ties are optional. YOU DEFINITELY DO NOT NEED TO RENT SPECIAL CLOTHING.
Very little of the top shows so what's important is the neckline (nothing too low cut or busy - a simple solid colored top will look great and sleeve length doesn’t matter).
The last day to submit photos for the yearbook is Thursday, January 28th. Photos submitted afterwards will not be included.
2021-2022 Academic Advising
Our 2021-2022 Course Catalog is currently available online for 9th grade and 10-12th grade.
In mid-January, we will be posting a new Curriculum Fair Google Site (must be logged in with fcpsschools.net) that will have information via different media formats (videos, pictures, graphics, etc) on the courses at Justice. We will send a notification when the site is live.
We will also be offering a Curriculum 3-Night Extravaganza for both rising 9th graders and current Justice students. Each night will feature four departments with breakout rooms representing specific courses. There will be a quick overview presentation with time for a Q&A.

This year, starting Feb 2, school counselors will be meeting with their students virtually during English 11, H/PE 10, and H/PE 9 classes to review information about course offerings. We would ask that prior to these meetings, students enter their course requests online within SIS StudentVUE. Course Codes will be made available via Justice’s FCPS public website as well as Class Level Google Classrooms (Class of 2022 = 11th, Class of 2023 = 10th, and Class of 2024 = 9th) and are for reference only. Parents will be able to view the courses students have selected using their ParentVue account. CLICK HERE if you need help accessing your ParentVue account.
School-life balance is an important consideration as students strive for academic and personal success. Course selection is a collaborative process; students will need to seek the advice of their parents, teachers and school counselor to plan appropriately for the upcoming year in order to ensure success.
UPDATED ATHELTIC EVENT SPECTATOR
INFORMATION
FCPS has altered their policy on fan attendance at athletic events.
As of January 8th
Fan attendance will continue, but FOR VARSITY ONLY events at HOME. Attendance will be limited to 25 spectators and be free of charge
Unfortunately, we will NOT be able to have spectators for our sub varsity events beginning next week. This decision was made out of an abundance of caution. Our goal is to ensure that our student athletes have the best opportunity to compete in as many events as possible.
AS PREVIOUSLY COMMUNICATED
- Per the Fairfax County Park Authority, there will be no spectators allowed at their pool facilities.
- Due to facility occupancy restrictions, for the track meet on January 9th, spectators will be limited to SENIOR parents/families only. This will also be our track senior night.
- Attendance will be allowed at HOME events only
- Wrestling and Basketball coaches will be responsible for maintaining and updating a spreadsheet with the names of the 25 spectators per team. Names must be on this list to enter.
- Currently, we estimate that we will be allowing 1-2 spectators per athlete, depending on roster size.
- For Basketball and Wrestling events, fans are asked to arrive at entrance to the gymnasium, no earlier then 10 minutes prior to scheduled game time. We can not allow entrance to the school until any previous game fans have exited. If the weather isn't cooperative, you may want to wait in your cars.
- As you enter the main gym entrance, you will be required to take part in a Covid-19 screening, to include a temperature check.
- Spectators will be directed to a specified section of the facility. There will be no concessions and outside food and drink is prohibited. (With the exception of water)
- All spectators must wear masks at all times! Spectators will also be expected to practice safe social distancing while on the schools campus.
- At the conclusion of the game, spectators will need to exit the facility as directed immediately. This is to ensure that we can have a smooth transition between games and allow staff to follow FCPS and VHSL protocols.
Although we understand that this doesn't get us back to normal and allow for everyone who wants to attend an event to do so, we hope that it is a step in that direction.
We remind everyone that SPORTMANSHIP is an expectation of those attending an event at Justice High School. As members of National District, Occoquan Region and the Virginia High School League we have high standards of sportsmanship that we expect from those in attendance towards the players, fans and officials. We appreciate you positive support!

Justice High School – Driver’s Education
The state of Virginia requires students and their parents or legal guardian to attend ONE session of Partners for Safe Teen Driving in order to receive their Pink Card (DEC-8). The 90 minute session requires participants to be actively involved during the presentation. All session LINKS, additional information, & instructions will be posted on your teacher’s Google Classroom. All session will run from 6:30pm-8pm. Attendees must be logged into the entire session to receive credit. If you are a current 10th, 11th or 12th grade Justice HS student seeking to attend a PSTD session, please email Greg Weisbecker at gpweisbecker@fcps.edu for information.
