News You Need to Know

Return to In-Person Instruction Update

Students returning to in-person learning has been delayed. Dr. Brabrand will present a new timeline to the School Board on February 2. This means the following:

  • Students remain on the same bell schedule until further notice (8:10 – 2:55)
  • January 19 and January 21 are Synchronous Learning Days. Students are expected to log on to their classes to receive direct instruction from teachers.

Edison Catch-up Days are January 12 and 13

Students log on to all their classes but teachers will not assign new work or provide new instruction.

Students will review and have the opportunity to get “caught up” or missed assignments and get help from teachers.

Attendance required and will be taken.

Events at the US Capitol on January 6, 2021

We have all been deeply troubled by the upsetting events, violence, and deaths that occurred at the US Capitol.  As educators, we are here to help students talk and process these events and some teachers held classroom discussions yesterday.  Today, Friday, January 8, the entire student body was given the opportunity to attend and participate in group sessions led by their counselors and Equity team members.  We understand the need to listen, talk, process, discuss, ask questions or simply write one’s feelings.  We facilitated that opportunity today but will be offering another open forum next week to continue the dialogue.  Information about the next student and faculty discussion forum will be posted in Schoology.

As a parent/guardian, you, too, play a vital role in helping your child process these events.  Families and students experiencing stress are encouraged to utilize supportive resources here.

Please complete the survey by Friday, January 15. Thank you for your valuable time and important ideas.

Citizenship Essay Contest

citizen

Virginia PTA is committed to promoting a sense of citizenship and responsibility in the lives of our children – tomorrow’s leaders.

To demonstrate the value that Virginia PTA places on good citizenship, we are proud to sponsor, support, and encourage Virginia students to write an essay for the 2021 Citizenship Essay Contest. This year’s selected theme is “How can we stand together when we are so far apart?”

WHO CAN ENTER?

All Virginia students in grades K through 12 presently enrolled in schools with active PTA/PTSAs in Good Standing may enter. A non-graded Special Writer Division is available and limited to students whose physical, cognitive, or mental health challenges meet ADA guidelines. Qualifying students entering this division create their own essay but may receive non-artistic accommodation and assistance from an adult.

CRITERIA:

In all categories, adherence to the theme as it relates to CITIZENSHIP, originality, clarity, thought and skill in standard written English will be judged. The theme must be used as the essay title and may not be altered in any way.
