PTO Nominating Committee Forming

We need you!  Please consider serving on the PTO’s nominating committee, as we begin to create both our slate of executive board officers for the 2021-22 and fill our committee chair positions.  The committee will meet virtually 2-4 times between February and April, and will work to name and recruit candidates.

The goal of the nominating committee and the eventual slate of officers is to reflect the racial, ethnic, religious diversity of our student and parent population, as well as to try to represent as many of our feeder elementary school communities as possible.  Please complete this form  if you are interested in serving on the nominating committee, or are interested in a role on the board.

Exec Board position descriptions can be found here .

Parent, Admin, PTO Walk n Talk - Tues, Jan 12

The third parent Walk n Talk will take place on Tuesday, January 12th, at 2PM.  Meet Principal Lisa Barrow as well as other parents and PTO Exec Board members, as we casually walk and talk around the parking lot at the front of the school (NOTE the location change, due to construction).  To ensure that we adhere to the Community Use guidelines issued by FCPS, please RSVP here if you plan to attend.

January Fun Lunches - Tell Your Students!

The team of student counsellors at Cooper will host weekly Fun Lunches for our students during the month of January!  Students will be broken up by grade level, and their counselors will sit in on the sessions.  Lunches are advertised to students via a mid-week email, and then students who RSVP will be sent a BBCU link the day of the Fun Lunch.  The schedule for January is:

  • Friday, January 8th at 10:30-11:10
  • Friday, January 15th at 10:30-11:10
  • *None Friday, January 22nd due to early release day
  • Friday, January 29th at 10:30-11:10

Thank you to our counselors for providing this social opportunity for our students, which came about in part as a result of the brainstorming session in our November PTO meeting.

Thank you Pine Springs ES gifts drivers!

A heartfelt thanks goes to the parent team that loaded, delivered, and unloaded (in the rain!) the gifts collected for donation to our friends at Pine Springs elementary school!  We couldn’t have completed our holiday gift drive without you:  David Cox, Elaine Kelly, Maggie Perrin, Christie Stute, and Marisha Vasani.

Book Discussion Group

Date/time information is forthcoming in next week’s PTO News You Choose about our book discussion group, which will be moderated by Mike Woltz of the NOVA PTA.

An Invitation from the PTSA at Thomas Jefferson High School:

The PTSA Diversity Committee of the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST) is launching a series of Diversity Talks webinars in January!  This series is especially for elementary and middle school students in grades 4-8. Join us to hear from people working in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields. What sparked their interest in STEM? What did they study in school? What kinds of jobs do they do? What else would you like to know?

Mark your calendars for Monday, January 11, at 6 p.m. to hear the first speakers of our Diversity Talk series: Suresh Shenoy, Neena Shenoy and Nikhil Shenoy. Suresh Shenoy, a graduate of the Indian Institute of Technology, is a business leader and philanthropist who has contributed deeply to many aspects of the northern Virginia community. He was executive vice president at Alyx Technologies Inc., a Virginia-based consulting and technology services company. Mr. Shenoy was a founding member of the Thomas Jefferson Partnership Fund and served on its board until 2002. Neena Shenoy is a Mechanical Engineer (Tufts University 1981 and MIT 1985) and founder of Technology & Engineering providing engineering services. She was involved in designing aircraft engines for GE and worked on the Space Shuttle program for NASA designing and installing Special Payloads. She has also provided program management in start up businesses here and in India. Nikhil Shenoy graduated from TJHSST in 2002, MIT in 2006 and the University of Chicago in 2014. After working at Goldman Sachs, Proctor and Gamble, and Kastle Systems, he is now CEO of Colvin Run Networks, a company that he started in northern Virginia to offer artificial intelligence and blockchain solutions to governments.

Updates from the Librarian:

Thanks for your support of Cooper’s first virtual book fair.

While overall sales were down from previous book fairs, we were able to turn a small profit. We will use that profit to make our temporary library (during renovation) happy and welcoming.

Teachers received a total of 67 books from their Wish Lists!

Our sister school, Pine Spring Elementary, received 49 books!

THANK YOU!
