Franklin MS Weekly Update - January 8

Franklin Families and Students,

I hope this message finds you and your family safe and well after a very challenging week for our region and our Nation. We know the events at the Capitol Building may have impacted us all in different ways and we hope you and your child had a safe space to process those feelings. As we enter into the last few weeks of the second quarter, we will continue to do our very best to support our students and families during these difficult times. Please know that our teachers, counselors, administrators and clinical staff are all here for our students and families.

As the Superintendent shared earlier this week, the Return to School (RTS) plan for in-person learning is currently paused. Dr. Brabrand will provide an update on the Return to School plan to the School Board on Tuesday, February 2. Additional updates regarding the impact of the RTS pause can be found below.

I would like to invite all of you to join us next week for an Equity Town Hall that we will be hosting.at 6:00 PM on Wednesday, January 13. A link for the session will be sent out next week. Our dialogue will be supported by Neicy Semper, who is the FCPS Region 5 Educational Specialist for Equity and Cultural Responsiveness. Please consider joining us for this important opportunity to listen, learn, and connect.

You are also encouraged to review some of the other upcoming events that are featured below as they will be great opportunities to connect with the Franklin community.

I am committed to keeping the FMS community informed in the weeks and months ahead and as soon as we have additional information about the Return to School plan, we will share it with all of you. Please contact me directly at dpwright@fcps.edu if there is anything our school team can do to support your student and family.

Sincerely,

Dustin Wright

Principal

Return to School Updates

  • Monday, January 11 - This Monday will remain an asynchronous learning day for our students. Asynchronous activities will be available for our students and they should review the Google Classroom sites for all of their classes. Attendance will still be taken on Mondays and students will be contacted by their Falcon Time teachers with a virtual attendance activity that needs to be completed by 12:00 PM.
  • Bell Schedule - Because we will not be transporting students to school during the pause in our RTS plan, we will not be moving to the new bell schedule on January 12 as previously advertised. We will continue to use the current bell schedule and will communicate any future changes in advance.
  • January 19 & 21 - Due to the pause in the Return to School plan, Tuesday, January 19 and Thursday, January 21 will now become synchronous days of virtual instruction. Students will follow the normal “odd day” class schedule for Tuesdays and Thursdays.

2021 Virginia School Survey of Climate and Working Conditions

This spring our school, in cooperation with the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services and the Virginia Department of Education, is conducting the Virginia School Survey of Climate and Working Conditions of students, teachers, and staff. The purpose of this survey is to measure student support, student engagement, school discipline, and safety conditions in each school. This information will be used to guide educational practices that produce a safe and supportive school environment. Even as we adapt to new instructional circumstances this year, this survey is important for understanding the impact of the pandemic on school climate and conditions, and continuing to monitor our progress towards recovery. The Virginia School Survey becomes a tool to guide instructional practices that provide support for all students in Virginia’s schools.

All Franklin MS students will be eligible to participate in the survey. The survey is voluntary and your child can decide not to participate. No action will be taken against you, your child, or the school if your child does not participate. Survey and opt out information will be sent to parents and guardians via email on Monday, January 11. Thank you for your cooperation in this important study of Virginia's schools.

Academic Advising

Academic Advising will take place in the coming weeks, and counselors will be meeting individually with students to discuss course selection for the 2021-22 school year. The Student Services Office will provide opportunities for rising 8th grade students to learn more about the core and electives courses that Franklin has to offer. Information on high school courses will also be provided to rising 9th graders.

Parents and guardians will receive an email from the Student Services Office next Tuesday with important dates and information to help with the course selection process.

Information regarding high school classes and course descriptions for Oakton High School may be found by visiting the Oakton High School Online Course Catalog.

The recorded presentation from Chantilly’s Curriculum Night and Curriculum Fair provides an opportunity for families to learn about Chantilly High School and their course offerings.
