The timeline we'd previously published for when each grade was to return to school is now obsolete. FCPS leadership will meet with the school board on Feb. 2, and a new plan for return to school will be discussed at that time. Kindergarten through 6th grade should not expect to return to in-person school before then.
FCPS will continuing pausing the in-person programs that had previously started. Our in-person autism and English Learners program will remain 100% online until a new Return to School timeline is approved by the school board.
As always, I advise all parents and teachers to read messages from FCPS leadership and school board. There may be other news and plans prior to the meeting on Feb. 2.

Because we will not be transporting students to school during the pause in our plan, we will not be moving to the new bell schedule on January 12 as previously stated. We will continue to use the current bell schedule until we have a revised Return to School schedule.
We will communicate any future changes to the bell schedule in advance.

Dear Parents/Guardians: All students who are enrolled in the Advanced Mathematics Grade 6 course are eligible for screening for placement in Algebra I Honors in grade 7. Your child is among a small number of students who is currently enrolled in Advanced Mathematics Grade 6 and eligible for screening for potential placement in Algebra I Honors next year. To qualify for this placement, students must first demonstrate readiness for formal abstract thinking as evidenced by a score at the 91st percentile or above on the Iowa Algebra Aptitude Test (IAAT). In addition to readiness for abstract thinking, students must show mastery of middle school mathematics as evidenced by a score of 500 or above on the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) Grade 7 mathematics test at the end of grade 6. Over the summer, middle schools will use the data from these two assessments (IAAT and SOL) to place your student in the appropriate course.
Algebra 1 Honors is a rigorous course that carries high school credit and is calculated into the student's grade point average. A desire to take Algebra 1 Honors in grade 7 implies a desire to take five additional years of mathematics through high school, including college-level courses.
An advanced level alternative to Algebra 1 Honors in grade 7 is Mathematics 7 Honors. It is not necessary for students to take the IAAT in order to enroll in Mathematics 7 Honors.
IOWA testing will take place at Forest Edge ES on February 1, 2021. The main office will contact parents the week of 1/11 to confirm that your child will participate and give you additional details.
Virginia Department of Education, the Virginia Early Childhood Foundation, and UVA are conducting this survey to learn about Virginia families’ experiences with the care and education for their young children (birth through kindergarten) this year.
We encourage you to complete the following survey. Virginia Survey of Families with Young Children.

Dear Sixth Grade Families,
AVID may be a great opportunity for your student! At Langston Hughes Middle School, there is an elective called AVID which is about helping students prepare for college, set goals, and achieve their dreams. AVID is a national program that targets students considered ‘in the middle,’ meaning they do well in regular classes, but could take at least one honors course with additional support. Look at the description below to see if you fit into this awesome family we call AVID! AVID students are typically students achieving in the middle, capable of completing a college preparatory path with support. These students often are not realizing their full potential academically. In the identification process a number of criteria are considered, including:
- 2.0+ GPA (some 2’s, but mostly 3’s and 4’s on elementary report card)
- Positive behavior and leadership potential
- Passing State test scores
- Good attendance record
- Demonstrates desire and determination to achieve academically and prepare for college
- Strong possibility to be first in the family to attend college
- Member of group that is historically underrepresented in 4-year colleges/universities
- Economically-disadvantaged
- Other special circumstances
If this sounds like your student, then they should consider applying to AVID! Students must apply to be enrolled in the AVID elective. The application process includes written responses, an interview, and teacher recommendations. You can get an application from your teacher or counselor.
Applying to AVID:
- -Students will learn more about AVID in their Morning Meetings the week of January 4th. The application is due January 15th
- For more information, and to access the application, please see this link: Student Application
- At the end of your application be sure you follow the directions to share it with Mrs. Burke and schedule your interview or do your FlipGrid. Interviews are in BBCU on January 11th and 18th or the FlipGrid is due by January 15th.
- Mrs. Markenson will be holding application help sessions on January 5th and 6th at 3:05 pm, students will get meet links from their teacher.

The Health Screening Commitment form will now be available in PVUE for In-Person students 45 days prior to the student’s first day of in-person instruction.
At least one parent/guardian must acknowledge the commitment once prior to their child coming In-Person. If a student has been In-Person and returned to virtual, their parent/guardian will not have to submit the Health Screening Commitment acknowledgment again.
If the parent/guardian does not have a PVUE account, a paper form can be signed. This document indicates the parental/guardian’s agreement and commitment to completing a daily health screening prior to sending the student to school and also to keep ill students at home. This form is required to be returned before the start of the in person school day.
Please email the completed and signed Health Commitment Form to Mervat Masoud, Registrar, at mmmasoud@fcps.edu. Please submit the form prior to the student’s return to school. Thank You!
The commitment form is available in English, Amharic, Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, Korean, Spanish, Urdu, and Vietnamese
Students whose parent/guardian have not returned a signed the Parent/Guardian Health Screening Commitment form will be required to complete a health screening and have their temperature taken daily by school staff until the form is received.
