Language Immersion Programs

Online registration for lottery opens January 25, 2021

Each year, rising kindergarteners and first graders have the chance to participate in DLI programs available in French, German, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish offered at Bailey’s ES, Fort Hunt ES, Fox Mill ES, Great Falls ES, Kent Gardens ES, Lake Anne ES, Laurel Ridge ES, London Towne ES, Orange Hunt ES, Powell ES, Ravensworth ES, and Rose Hill ES through a county-wide lottery process.

Online registration for this lottery process opens on January 25, 2021.  Registration is open to all rising kindergarteners and first graders living in Fairfax County.  A SIS account is required to complete the application.  If a student is not currently enrolled in FCPS, registration at the base school for the upcoming school year will be required.

Please be aware that FCPS does not provide transportation for students who reside outside the attendance area of the DLI schools and a one-time fee of $100 must be paid upon acceptance of an out-of-boundary placement (see Notice 5922).

In the DLI Program, children spend half of the day in the target language learning math, science, health, and language arts of the partner language.  The other half of the day is spent learning in English focusing on English language arts and social studies.

The instructional program follows the Fairfax County Public Schools Program of Studies at each grade level.  Math, science, and health were chosen for partner language instruction due to the use of manipulatives and concrete hands-on activities which aid the natural second language acquisition process.  Students are able to connect the skills learned across both languages.

For additional information and dates for information meetings go to this link.

Character Trait of the Month

December’s Character Trait was Generosity - willing to share and give to others.

Take a look at how students are being generous: https://youtu.be/B900Ar9P27w

January’s Character Trait is acceptance - including and respecting everyone, regardless of differences, such as beliefs, race, gender, or religion.  Self-acceptance is also important.

Students can take pictures or make videos of sharing/giving and send them to Mrs. Guillion (vguillion@fcps.edu) and Mrs. Coleman (kdcoleman@fcps.edu).

Some ideas are to explain how a person in history showed or displayed acceptance or explain how you show acceptance of yourself and/or others.

Due date - Friday, January 22.

Warmline Available to All Virginians Struggling to Cope

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused upheaval and unexpected stress in the lives of so many people.  To support Virginians, the VA C.O.P.E.S. (compassionate, optimistic, person-centered, empowering support) warmline is available to offer support.  The mental health tip line started in May 2020 and, thanks to new funding, the service will be extended through May 2021.

Any Virginian can make a confidential call and speak to a crisis counselor about what's bothering them.  The line is available Monday-Friday, 9am-9pm and 5pm-9pm on the weekends by phone or text at 877-349-6428.  Spanish counselors are also available.

The warmline is available to residents who may be struggling to cope with the effects of the pandemic including isolation, fear, grief, and anxiety.  Not only will callers be provided a supportive compassionate ear, but they will also be provided additional information, resources, and referrals as needed.

Please spread the word through your networks!

Note: VA Copes is not a suicide hotline.  If in crisis, call 800-273-8255 for the National Crisis Hotline, or 911.

Mental Health Resources

Below are several options for you to speak with a mental health professional.  Do not worry about making the wrong choice. Every number leads to someone who can help.

Call the CrisisLink hotline at 703-527-4077, 1-800-273-8255 or text “CONNECT” to 855-11.

Call Children’s Regional Crisis Response (CR2) at 571-364-7390.

Call CSB Emergency Services at 703-573-5679.

Bring your child to the CSB’s Merrifield Crisis Response Center, 8221 Willow Oaks Corporate Drive, Fairfax, VA 22031.

Call 911 if it is a life-threatening emergency. Make sure to notify the operator that it is a psychiatric emergency and ask for an officer trained in crisis intervention or trained to assist people experiencing a psychiatric emergency.
