Korean Two Way Immersion Information Night

Rising kindergarten and first grade parents are invited to join a virtual meeting on January, 13, 2021 at 6:30 to learn more about our Korean Immersion Program at CPES. This meeting is for families who are not currently participating in the program. The meeting will be held virtually and the meeting link will be made available on the Dual Language Immersion registration site by the day of the meeting.

Fairfax County Public School elementary students are able to learn Korean at Colin Powell Elementary School through the two-way immersion program that begins in kindergarten. The students who participate in this program come from one of two language backgrounds. Half of the students in the class come from families whose native language is English, and the other half from families whose native language is Korean.

The program focuses on the development of literacy and content area skills in English and Korean. The children are taught half of the school day in English and the other half in Korean. The students who speak English learn literacy skills that are currently taught in English as well as literacy skills taught in Korean. Through this exposure, they acquire the Korean language. Students who speak Korean are developing English language skills while also developing literacy and content area skills in their home language. The program mutually benefits both student populations as they can serve as peer language role models for each other. The curriculum follows the Fairfax County Public Schools Program of Studies.

Fairfax County Public Schools’ online registration for the county-wide lottery for Dual Language Immersion (DLI) programs will open on Monday, January 25.  Current prekindergarten students may apply for the kindergarten immersion program and current kindergarten students may apply for the first grade immersion programs for the 2021-22 school year. Parents who are interested in the DLI programs in FCPS are encouraged to attend one of the upcoming informational meetings.
