A Note from Mr. Gates
I hope you had a wonderful winter break and a happy 2021! As we leave all that 2020 brought us behind, I am certainly committed to entering the new year with a positive attitude, mindset, and outlook. We realize, and understand, how difficult much of this past year may have been on you professionally, emotionally, and personally. While we know a lot of good still needs to happen in this new year, we can only hope it is one that supports more peace, calm, and consistency for our students, staff, and families.
As a reminder, tomorrow, January 4, is an asynchronous day for students. This means there will be NO morning meeting. In addition, January 11, will also be an asynchronous day for ALL students.
As we enter into the next chapter of this school year, I want to thank you all for your continued support and understanding of our teachers and our school as we have navigated this new normal. This has been far from easy for so many of us and we appreciate the consistent parent support we have received. We look forward to a new year of rich learning, strong relationships, and continuing to build our steadfast community. Looking forward to 2021! May it bring hope, creativity and renewed energy as we work through the challenges ahead of us.
Return to In-Person Learning
The PROPOSED dates for in-person learning are as follows:
Group 5 PreK & Kindergarten Proposed Return Date January 12
Group 6 Grades 1 & 2 Proposed Return Date January 19
Group 7 Grades 3 & 4 Proposed Return Date January 26
Group 7 Grades 5 & 6 Proposed Return Date February 2
More information about whether we move forward with the proposed dates, will be decided by the school board at their meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 5.
For the most up-to-date information on the FCPS return to school plan visit https://www.fcps.edu/returntoschool. In addition, make sure to read all FCPS correspondence, specifically pertaining to potential changes regarding our return to in-person instruction.
In addition to the proposed return dates, on January 12 Hollin Meadows' bell schedule will be adjusted to 9 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. (Note: time has been updated from the Dec. 14 newsletter) for both in-person and virtual students. To accommodate this change, a revised daily class schedule will be sent prior to the start of in-person learning.
Outstanding Employee Awards
The Hollin Meadows Outstanding Employee Awards selection committee reviewed the many worthy nominations (20+) from community members and colleagues and selected the following staff members to represent Hollin Meadows:
Outstanding Operational Employee - Sam Kent (instructional assistant)
Outstanding New Teacher - Sabina Chlus (kindergarten)
Outstanding Teacher - Matt Rivera (third grade)
Outstanding Leader - Tieya White (assistant principal)

Parent Learning Opportunity
The FCPS Parent Resource Center is offering a free webinar, Zoomed Out? 5 Strategies to Get Even the Most Reluctant Kids Focused, Engaged, and Motivated: A Webinar for Families. on January 7 or January 8. In the webinar, families will learn how to tackle the daily power struggle and help children focus during instruction. The session will be presented by Ann Dolin, educational consultant and director of Education Connections, Inc. For more information and to register for one of the sessions, click this LINK.
