Coates Families,
We hope your children had a great winter break! We’re looking forward to getting back to school tomorrow, January 4. Here are a few reminders about this week plus an optional opportunity for your kids. None of this is new info if you’ve been receiving Keep In Touch messages from Coates.
All Coates students will return to their online classrooms at 9:00. K, 1st & 2nd graders can expect to have a normal Monday morning after their lesson. 3rd-6th graders will have their 9:00 lesson as usual, but they will not have one-on-one or small group meetings with teachers after that. They will be working on independent assignments (see Google Classroom). The 3rd-6th grade teachers have tasks to complete and plans to make for their tentatively scheduled return to in-persons school.
Our current in-person programs (autism program; English Learners) will remain online only this week. We expect to return to in-person school on Jan. 12. Stay tuned!
Jan. 5-8 will be our normal, online schedule. Please ensure that your kids are on time for lessons and that they complete their work at home.
As you know from our last Keep In Touch message, January brings a new bell schedule and a timeline for the return to in-person school (for students whose parents chose to have them return). There is an FCPS School Board meeting on Jan. 5. As always, I advise all Coates parents to pay attention to any decisions the board or superintendent make regarding school programs. For now, the teachers and I are planning on seeing in-person schooling begin for Kindergarten on 1/12, 1st & 2nd grades on 1/19, 3rd & 4th grades on 1/26, and 5th & 6th grades on 2/2. The new bell schedule for Coates (9:45-4:15) begins for all grades on Jan. 12).
On Monday, any student who wants to come to our first Monday Meetup can use the appropriate link below. Meetups are not lessons, they are not run by the classroom teacher, and they are not required. These are unstructured social events. Consider them an online recess for the whole grade level. If your child wants to come and chat with any friend of their choosing, they can do so. We’ll have a staff moderator who can place kids in breakout groups with friends. Appropriate behaviors are expected.
Where parents feel it’s appropriate, we encourage students to get contact information from friends at the meetup so that they can keep in touch outside of school. Socialization is important!
