Yearbook Cover Art Contest Entries Due TONIGHT by Midnight!

This school year is like none we’ve ever had before, but our Lane Lion spirit is as strong – or stronger! – than ever! We are going to try to put together a yearbook this year, and we need a cover for it. We need your child’s help to capture our school spirit in art!

This year’s cover-art competition is open to all grade levels. An overall winner and grade-level winners will be selected. The overall winner’s work will appear full-size on the front cover of the 2020 – 2021 yearbook, which will be distributed at the end of the year. Grade-level winners’ works will appear in a reduced size on the back cover. You can find complete rules and submission requirements here

All entries must be received by email TONIGHT – Friday, December 11th – by midnight. In the email, be sure to include the student’s name and teacher’s name.

Tentative Return to School Timeline

(Subject to CDC Core Health Metrics and FCPS Staffing Metrics)

return to school timeline

If CDC core health metrics and FCPS staffing metrics allow, students in groups 5 through 8 whose parents selected in-person instruction will begin to return to school for two days per week of in-person instruction and two days per week of virtual instruction after Winter Break.

When students return to school, our new bell schedule will be 10:05 a.m. to 4:50 p.m. The bell schedule will not change until students return to school for in-person learning. The change is necessary to allow for social distancing on buses and provides time to sanitize buses between routes.

Kindergarten students whose families have chosen to have their students return to school in-person two days each week will tentatively return to school the week of January 11th. Kindergarten students who will attend school on Tuesdays and Wednesdays will return to school on January 12th, and those who will attend school on Thursdays and Fridays will return to school on January 14th.

Students in grades 1 and 2 whose families have chosen to have their students return to school in-person two days each week will tentatively return to school the week of January 18th. Grade 1 and 2 students who will attend school on Tuesday and Wednesday will return to school on January 19th, and those who attend school on Thursdays and Friday will return to school on January 21st.

Students in grades 3 and 4 will tentatively return the week of January 25th. They will attend school in-person on either Tuesday and Wednesday OR Thursday and Friday, as assigned.

Students in grades 5 and 6 will tentatively return the week of February 1st. They will attend school in-person on either Tuesday and Wednesday OR Thursday and Friday, as assigned.

Pay close attention to FCPS emails and social media accounts to stay up-to-date on continuing updates to this plan.

Annual Lane Library Book Fair Is Now a Virtual Lane Bookstore!

A pandemic can’t stop the Book Fair. In this unusual year, we just need to host it a little bit differently. The annual book fair has become a virtual bookstore!

Lane’s online bookstore has most of the offerings you’re used to seeing at our in-person fairs, including best sellers for all ages and teacher wish lists. You can also donate to our book drive fund to help purchase books for Lane families in need.

You can check out the flyer for more information or just go straight to https://bit.ly/lanebooks to start shopping!

The proceeds raised (other than book drive donations) will be used to support the Lane ES library, which is used by all students, staff, and the larger Lane community.

Questions? Contact Sue Chozick, Librarian, at schozick@fcps.edu.

Thank you for your support! Happy reading!

Library Curbside Checkout Continues by Appointment

The Lane Library is continuing its curbside checkout. Please review the process on the school website if you are interested.

Again, please remember that library books may only be picked up during curbside events. Please do not come to the school at other times to pick up the library books.

Trunk Tuning Available for Strings Students on Monday, December 14th, 12 – 1 p.m.

Mrs. Hicks will be available to tune instruments for Strings students in the Lane parking lot by the field from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday, December 14th. Mrs. Hicks has noticed that many instruments are out of tune because of the onset of colder weather, so please take advantage of this opportunity.

**If you cannot come to this Trunk Tuning, please take your child’s instrument to a local music store where they will be able to tune it. **

Directions for the Trunk Tuning:
Please leave the instrument in the trunk (outside of the case) so Mrs. Hicks can tune it as you drive up. Please remain in your vehicle. Students do not need to be present for the Trunk Tuning (unless they just want to come and say hi).

Local Level IV AAP Is Coming to Lane!

Lane continues to work through the process to become a Local Level IV Advanced Academics Program (AAP) site. This means that Lane students who qualify for full-time, Level IV placement – starting with third grade next year and adding a grade level each year after – would not need to leave their base school to receive that instruction.

On Thursday, December 17th from 7 to 8 p.m., we will host a town hall session about this topic. Please be on the lookout for more information as well as a link to join the session coming soon!
