Dear Floris Families,
We hope that your families have a wonderful Winter Break and a Happy New Year. What a year 2020 has been! As we wrap up the final week of school in 2020, we once again share how proud we are of the effort and perseverance demonstrated by our students, staff and families. There have been challenges, and there may be more challenges ahead. Together we know that we will continue to demonstrate grace to one another and work to create the best learning environment possible for our students.
Just a reminder that all FCPS schools are closed December 21- January 1 for Winter Break. The Floris Main Office will also be closed. Teachers look forward to welcoming their students and the new year at Morning Meetings on January 4 at 9:15am. Students will then participate in asynchronous learning after Morning Meetings.
The new Floris bell schedule, 9:45am-4:15pm, is scheduled to begin on January 12, 2021. Please watch for details after Winter Break about dates for grade level return to in-person and teacher planning/prep days.
FCPS shares daily metrics at the Return to School COVID-19 Health Metrics page to allow the community to see the current numbers and thresholds.
This is the last Friday Message for 2020. Our next Friday Message will be sent on Friday, January 8, 2021.
We feel so very blessed and grateful for the support and flexibility of our staff, students and families.

Positivity Project
WORDS AND ACTIONS
As we continue to grow the concept of “Positivity in Action” and our “Other People Matter” mindset, students will be introduced to the concepts surrounding “knowing my words and actions affect others.” Over the following five weeks, they will be introduced to the character traits of Perseverance, Self-Control, Optimism, and Prudence. During the week, students will have daily discussions and activities (grade level specific) helping them understand that everything that they do and say can affect people either positively or negatively.
Quote of the Week: “Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless.” – Mother Teresa

This week's spotlight...
We started the year sharing about our new to Floris Staff and are now sharing some fun details about more Floris Staff members.
Saundra Hand
“I wanted a job with purpose, and I enjoy working with kids,” says Ms. Hand, explaining why she chose the teaching profession. She has been a teacher for 16 years, six of which we’ve been lucky to have her at Floris.
“What I love most about teaching is the students. I enjoy making connections with them and finding humor throughout the day,” explains Ms. Hand, adding that one of the benefits of her job is that every day is different. She loves all the new ideas that students share with her. Ms. Hand adds that Floris families have demonstrated that they truly value education and are thoroughly invested in the success of our students, both academically and emotionally; she really appreciates their thoughtfulness and dedication.
Married with three children of her own (Sophia – 18, Ethan – 16, and Tahlia – 13), Ms. Hand loves to spend her time outside of school knitting, taking her dog for walks, and reading – she recently read Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens, which she loved. Ms. Hand considers being a good mother and wife her greatest accomplishment.
Melissa Hayes
After teaching for eight years, Ms. Hayes took some time off to be a mom to her three children, Logan (10), Ava (8), and Taylor (4). She has now taught at Floris for three years and currently teaches the second grade.
Ms. Hayes recalls struggling with reading when she was a child. “After working with a couple of wonderful teachers who not only helped me improve as a reader, but also built up my confidence, I decided I wanted to be just like them.” What she loves most about teaching is seeing her students’ eyes light up when they understand something new and can apply it. “I’m proud to be part of the Floris community! Floris rocks!”
Outside of school, Ms. Hayes likes to spend time exploring new places with her husband and children. Some recent and enjoyable outdoor excursions have been to Harpers Ferry in West Virginia, Natural Bridge State Park, and Virginia Safari Park. Finding peacefulness and energy in nature, Ms. Hayes also enjoys working in her garden. She restores her inner balance by practicing Ashtanga yoga which is “always challenging and I love the headstand.”
