Thank You for Your Generosity!
Thank you to all the students, families, and staff members who contributed to the gift, coat, and book drives for our “sister school” Pine Spring Elementary. Donations will be delivered to PSES next Monday in order to be disbursed to the community.
A special thank you as well to all the students and families who dropped off canned goods at Cooper MS and Langley HS this past Monday to benefit the SHARE of McLean Food Pantry. It was a wonderful event for our schools and your generosity will allow the program to support our community. It is estimated that nearly 6600 cans of food were donated at this event!
Reading, and Math Inventory Scores Reporting
Throughout the fall, students were expected to participate in the administration of the Reading Inventory (all English 7 and 8 classes) and the Math Inventory (Math 7, Math 7 HN, Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Algebra HN classes). The assessments were recommended as part of the 2020 Distance Learning evaluation report from the School Board. Scores are used to identify individual students who may benefit from additional instructional support. There will be additional assessments administered in the winter and spring that will allow teachers to monitor student progress. Together, these performance measures support reflection on implementation of the revised curriculum at the classroom and division levels.
During October and November, teachers dedicated a full 80 minute block of class time for students to complete the inventories to ensure fidelity of test administration and offer ample time for students to do their best work. Teachers and other staff members have followed up with students missing the assessments. We will continue to do so to ensure every student is able to access this opportunity. The presentation linked here (student Google log-in required) has the directions for accessing both inventories.
English and Math teachers will be entering scores into SIS gradebooks by Friday, December 11th. These scores will be entered as “Not for Grading” meaning that this in no way impacts a student’s grade. The tables below outline the end-of-year proficiency target ranges for both grade levels.. If you have any additional questions, please contact your child’s content teacher(s).

Active Fairfax Transportation Plan Youth Advisory Committee
Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) is in the beginning stages of developing an ActiveFairfax Transportation Plan which aims to understand and plan for how people travel and access destinations and services by biking, walking, rolling (scooter/wheelchair/stroller), hiking, running and riding in and around their local community and throughout the county. FCDOT wants to know what challenges people are currently experiencing or observing as they actively travel and highlight what improvements they would like to see in the future with safe, convenient and comfortable active travel in mind.
- Are you often walking, biking or using bus transit to get around?
- Are you interested in making it safer, more convenient, and more fun to get around Fairfax County without a car?
- Are you looking to earn service hours for school?
- Are you under the age of 18?
As a committee member, you will:
- Discuss the needs of youth to get around Fairfax County by bike, foot, or bus
- Aid in developing a plan for a countywide safe and convenient trail and bike path network using your local knowledge and experience
- Share ideas for educational programs that encourage more people to walk or bike
- Support the project in youth engagement efforts
You will meet virtually up to four times a year, over the next 2-3 years.
To apply, send a short bio and cover letter to activefairfax@fairfaxcounty.gov
Application deadline: December 15, 2020
