Expectations for Mondays

Thank you for your patience as we have navigated several weeks of ever-changing dates. In anticipation of the return of Kindergarteners, and then students in grades 1 and 2, FCPS designated days for teacher preparation/asynchronous days for students. In the midst of these scheduled days, the COVID data resulted in a pause of the return to in-person instruction. At this point in time, FCPS has not shared an anticipated return date for any of our primary grade levels. Beginning Monday, December 7, all grade levels will return to our beginning of the year Monday schedules. This means that ALL students will be expected to join their teacher for morning meeting on Mondays at 8:35 a.m. and teachers all teachers will resume the scheduling of small group/individual time with students virtually. Attendance will be taken according to participation in morning meeting. In addition, we are happy to bring back our optional sessions with specialists on Mondays. You can find the updated schedule for these sessions below and in Schoology.

Please remember:

  • Students who are scheduled for small group or individual times with teachers for instructional support are expected to attend those sessions. These students are welcome to join the optional activities with specialists outside of the times they are scheduled for instructional support.
  • The sessions with specialists are completely optional. We do encourage our students to check out these fun activities so that we can collect their feedback on their experience and possible future possibilities.
Monday Sessions

Grades K-2

Wixie Basics

Creative exploration with a winter theme.

Boot Camp

Explore different types of workout routines that you can do at home. Examples could include workouts that focus on different muscle groups, workout circuits, weight exercises, etc. No equipment needed!

Music With the Animals

Music and movement exploration based on Wild Symphony by Dan Brown

Painting Club

Follow along with Ms. Lin in creating a painting! You will need paint, water, a paint brush, and paper! If you do not have those materials, do not fret- you can follow along with other art materials like crayons or pastels! You can also watch and create your own masterpiece later when you have materials.

The Daily SET Puzzle

The award-winning game challenges players to find as many SETs as they can- hopefully all six! A SET is three cards where each individual feature (color, shape, number and shading) is either all the same OR all different. Not only is it fast-paced fun, it also builds skills and exercises the brain!

Because it has a rule of logic, and because players must apply this rule to the spatial array of patterns all at once, they must use both left brain and right brain thought processes. A new SET puzzle is available each day.

Plexers

Plexers is derived from the word perplex! Typically, they are pictures that require the participant to think about the direction, size and/or position of the letters. Students develop divergent thinking skills through taking the necessary different view of symbols and coding.

Grades 3-6

How Does That Work?

Have you ever wondered how things are made, or how they work?

Come explore a variety of topics as we discover how various everyday items are made.

This group will not meet on December 14th.

Wixie (Grades 3-5 only)

Have some fun and turn yourself into an elf!

Boot Camp

Explore different types of workout routines that you can do at home. Examples could include workouts that focus on different muscle groups, workout circuits, weight exercises, etc. No equipment needed!

Harry Potter Trivia

Harry Potter fans can test their knowledge of the book series. Trivia members will be placed into teams, and they will work together to answer the questions to earn the most points for their House (trivia team).

From FCPS Get2Green: Walking Wednesdays

Safe Routes to School is starting Walking Wednesdays, a new Fairfax County initiative to encourage everyone to get out and walk. Walking before school on Wednesday will help to normalize our routine and allow students and parents to get a little exercise before sitting down in our classrooms. Each month will have a theme. December’s Walking Wednesday theme is “Walk on the Wild Side.” Call on your neighbors to help with this month's theme.  Students out on their Walking Wednesday will be on the lookout for Lions, Tigers and Bears, oh my.  Last spring many neighbors placed Teddy Bears in their windows for kids to spot.  This month any stuffed animal will do for Walking on the Wild Side.

FCPS Safe Routes to School is collaborating with Fairfax County Park Authority, INOVA, and the Partnership for a Healthier Fairfax.

Walking Wednesdays will encourage everyone to walk the block and greet friends and classmates. You can follow FCPS Safe Routes to School @FCPSSRTS1 on Twitter or Walking Wednesdays on Facebook.  Share your photos using #FCPSWalkingWednesdays!

Library Curbside Pickup

The next curbside pickup event is Monday, December 7 from 9-11 a.m. and 1-3 p.m. We saved any book requests from the fourth round that weren’t picked up on 11/23 as well. After that, the books from round four will be checked back in so others may check them out.  Students may make requests for this round (round 5) until noon on Friday, 12/4.  Remember to wait for the email alerting you that the books are ready before coming to the school to pick them up.  Emails are generally sent on Mondays and Fridays.  Click on the following link for detailed information about the process: https://www.smore.com/gzxm8. Let me know if you have any questions at waergler@fcps.edu
