LBSS Weekly News - December 4, 2020

Front Door

Message from Dr. Smith

Hello Bruin Families,

We hope that you all enjoyed the Thanksgiving holiday and were all able to find time to rest and connect with loved ones.  This week we met with families regarding the next steps for the Athletics Winter Sports, we connected with our Military Ambassador's Club and Military Families.  We also had a great virtual winter concert by our High School Orchestra students.

Next week all of our students will participate in school-wide Catch Up Days on Thursday, December 10th, and Friday, December 11th.  We have heard concern about workload and this is a dedicated time for students to get caught up on any missing work in each class.  Students will go to each class for attendance and to check in with their teacher regarding work that needs to be completed.  Teachers will not be teaching new content or providing any new assignments.  The next Catch Up Days will be during the 3rd and 4th quarters, if needed.

We value the partnership that we have with you, our families, to help our students be as successful as possible.  If you have needs or concerns, please reach out to your child's teacher, counselor and Subschool administrator.

United as Bruins,

Daniel W. Smith, Ed.D.

Important Information for All

Parent Academy

Thank you to those who joined us Tuesday night for the Winter Meet the Coaches Night. If you would like a recap of what you missed, you can find the recording here.

"Catch up Days"

Lake Braddock Secondary School will be hosting “Catch Up Days” for our students on December 10 and 11. These will be synchronous instruction days, where students will follow their regular schedule. Teachers will take attendance at the beginning of each class and will allow students to use this time to catch up on assignments, activities or assessments that they might have missed. No new content or assignments will be given to students on these days.

Congrats to LB Students

We are so proud of two of our students, Lidya Demilew and Hannah Lee, who have been named Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation Semifinalists. Only 1,609 Semifinalists were chosen among 99,403 applicants this year (just 1.6%!) because of their outstanding leadership, academic achievements, and dedication to their community. In Virginia, only 7 schools out of 34 total have two semifinalists. Lidya and Hanna will now continue through the process with the opportunity of becoming a Coca-Cola Scholar. Congratulations Lidya and Hannah!

Learn more about the #CokeScholars Program $20,000 college scholarship and see a full list of Semifinalists at Cokeurl.com/2021SF.#CokeScholars SF.

Computer Science Education Week 2020

The week of December 7th is Computer Science Education Week 2020. During this week, many schools around the world host an Hour of Code. What is the Hour of Code? An excerpt from the HoC website states that "The Hour of Code started as a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify "code," to show that anybody can learn the basics, and to broaden participation in the field of computer science. It has since become a worldwide effort to celebrate computer science, starting with 1-hour coding activities but expanding to all sorts of community efforts. This grassroots campaign is supported by over 400 partners and 200,000 educators worldwide."

At Lake Braddock, we are participating in the Hour of Code in several ways. First, we will provide ongoing information about coding and computer science to the community through social media. We are also providing teachers with options to incorporate coding into their lessons. Finally, students will participate in an Hour of Code event during a future Advisory lesson. It is our hope that this will help our students and community become familiar with the benefits that computer science and coding have to offer.

Teaching Tolerance

At Lake Braddock SS, and in the Lake Braddock Pyramid, we are committed to providing a welcoming and inclusive environment. We are happy to share a resource with you that includes information, suggestions and discussion prompts for parents and students of all ages to explore the concepts of identity, bias and prejudice. Beyond the Golden Rule: A Parents’ Guide to preventing and Responding to Prejudice is a book designed to help families with children of all ages honor the differences in themselves and in others — and to reject prejudice and intolerance. Three age-specific sections feature everyday parents sharing personal stories about the challenges and rewards of raising children in today’s diverse world.  Psychologists, educators and parenting experts offer practical, age-appropriate advice to help you integrate lessons of respect and tolerance in day-to-day activities. And a final section offers guidance for reflecting upon your own biases, and how those biases affect your parenting.

LBSS Online Book Store

The LBSS Library is hosting an online bookstore through Bookworm Central that will continue throughout the entire year. Students and teachers can purchase books and have them delivered to their house. Purchases over $30 will be delivered for free. Stock up for the holidays and support the library.

The Online Library Book Store opens December 7. Please enjoy this promotional video HERE.

Contact the LBSSLibrary@fcps.edu with any questions.

Thank you, Lake Braddock SS Librarians

Senior Stamp Event

Due to low temperatures, the painting/stamping of the senior parking space event for the Class of 2021 has been postponed to a later date. Unfortunately, paint does not set if the temperature is too cold. When a new date has been selected, we will communicate the information on our website and in the Senior Google Classroom. We understand this change is inconvenient and disappointing for our Seniors and we are sorry. We are committed to having this event and will continue to look for options to pull this event off for our Seniors as soon as possible.

Senior Portraits on December 9

An email was recently sent to Seniors with details regarding senior portraits on December 9. If you need to sign up for a time, use this link:

Athletics and Activities

Is your child interested in trying out for a LBSS sport?!  Well look no further for information on how to make that happen.

The VHSL has adopted a condensed schedule for the 2020-2021 season. Teams will play 60% of their normal regular seasons. Winter sports will run from December 7 through February 20, with the first contest on December 21. Fall sports will begin practices on February 4 and continue until May 1, with competition beginning on March 1. Spring sports will cap off the schedule from April 12 through June 26, with April 26 marking the first competitions.

  1. Online Registration: FCPS has adopted a new online registration process that requires parents to register their students for school-based activities and athletics. Lake Braddock’s site is now live! This registration applies to the following:
  • Academic Activities - Debate, Forensics, Scholastic Bowl, and Theater
  • Athletic Activities - Fall Sports, Winter Sports, and Spring Sports

Parents create one account per family. Students in the same family need to be registered within the same account. To access the Lake Braddock Activities & Athletics Registration Website, please click here.

  1. Concussion Education is now a required step within registration. It must be reviewed in its entirety and electronically signed by both the parent and student. If a paper version has already been submitted for 2020-21, you will still need to complete the Concussion Education step to move forward. This will be our only accepted form of Concussion Education completion moving forward. Signed paper versions will no longer be collected by the Athletic Training Program or Activities Office.
  2. Emergency Care Form information is now collected via the registration process. Please make sure this information is complete and accurate, as it will be shared with EMS in the event of an emergency. Hard copies will only be required for Green or Yellow Day activities.
  3. VHSL Physical Forms will continue to be collected by the Athletic Training Staff or Activities Office. Physicals can be emailed to Kristyn Wharton at kwharton@fcps.edu (PDF format preferred), mailed to the school, or dropped off in the main office. If you have already submitted a physical for this school year, it is on file and will remain valid until June 30, 2021. Blank VHSL forms can be found here.
  4. Parent/Guardian Health Screening Commitment Form is an agreement to complete a daily health screening prior to sending your student-athlete to school. We are asking parents to complete this form electronically. This will allow your child to enter the building for workouts and/or practices amidst COVID-19 procedures. To fill this form out, please click here.
  5. Tryout Card Distribution will be shared via News You Choose, the LB Athletics website, and social media prior to the start of each season. We typically distribute tryout cards the week before each season starts. To review the updated Tryout Information for the 2020-2021 school year, please click here.
