Hughes MS Updates

Principal's Message

Hughes Students and Families,

Update on Service-Learning Expectations for 2020-2021

During these uncertain times, FCPS and LHMS recognize that students and families are in very different places in regard to their capacity for enacting service learning.  For some students, providing service to others will meet Social and Emotional Learning needs, allowing them to feel like they are making a difference.  For others, who have familial commitments outside of school, a requirement of service learning beyond the school day may be difficult.  Traditionally, 8th grade students are asked to set 15 hours as a goal for their time in middle school.  For this year, students should set their own goals based on their individual situations.

As an IB World School, Hughes still places a high value on student service and our role in the community and students who are part of certain student organizations like National Junior Honor Society will still have service hour expectations.  We have shared the following choice board to help students in finding service activities that fulfill their commitment to their community while maintaining social distance requirements: bit.ly/ConnectionsOffScreen (parents will need to be logged in to their students’ FCPS Google accounts).   Families can use these as a model for their own ideas that will benefit the family or community, and parents can verify hours for their student. We hope this will be a helpful resource for those students who have the capacity for service during this unusual school year.

Monday Attendance and Asynchronous Learning

On Mondays, students will log on to their 1st period teacher’s BBCU class link from 7:30 am to 8:00 am to check in and complete a Google attendance and reflection form. Teachers submit attendance at this time. The Google form will also be posted to the 1st period teachers Google classroom and the Class of 2005 and 2026 Google classrooms. Students should complete the form no later than 2:00 pm on Mondays to be accounted for attendance. If forms are completed after the check-in, attendance may be updated the following day. Between 8:00 am and 10:30 am students can check in with teachers or counselors for office hours. Students will use the teachers’ or counselors’ BBCU class links. Teachers may also invite students to attend an extra learning session during this time. Other than the check in, office hours, or work time with teachers, students will be working asynchronously on Mondays. Students should be sure to check their Google classrooms for each teacher to stay up to date with asynchronous assignments.

Did you know that your student has 24/7 access to great free eBook’s and audiobooks through our school library, and can also request and pickup print books from the Hughes library?

LHMS will host its very own Winter Reading Games to get students reading and talking about books. Encourage your student to read at least one book during this school-wide challenge, or to earn multiple bronze, silver, and gold medals! Students and families can find the information on the library website (have student login to fcpsschools account to see embedded files) and through your English teacher’s Google Classroom. (Students may also read books from the public library or from home for the Winter Reading Games.)

Let the Games begin!

Community Resource: Warmline Available to All Virginians Struggling to Cope

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused upheaval and unexpected stress in the lives of so many people. To support Virginians, the VA C.O.P.E.S. (compassionate, optimistic, person-centered, empowering support) warmline is available to offer support. The mental health tip line started in May 2020 and, thanks to new funding, the service will be extended through May 2021.

Any Virginian can make a confidential call and speak to a crisis counselor about what's bothering them. The line is available Monday-Friday 9am-9pm and 5pm-9pm on the weekends by phone or text at 877-349-6428. Spanish counselors are also available.

The warmline is available to residents who may be struggling to cope with the effects of the pandemic including isolation, fear, grief, and anxiety. Not only will callers be provided a supportive compassionate ear, but they will also be provided additional information, resources, and referrals as needed.

Please spread the word through your networks!

Note: VA Copes is not a suicide hotline. If in crisis call 800-273-8255 for the National Crisis Hotline, or 911.
