Justice Newsletter - November 29

A Note from Principal Eck

Dear Justice Families,

I hope that you enjoyed your Thanksgiving break! Just a reminder that Mondays are asynchronous. Please remember that while there is no bell schedule on Mondays, attendance is still required. Students are responsible for logging in to their 4th period/Advisory teacher’s Google Classroom and completing the Google attendance form. During Mondays, students are encouraged to finish any outstanding work due for the week. We want to make sure our students have the time necessary to complete short and long term assignments.

As we continue to find ways to support students in managing their workload, Dr. Brabrand asked schools to identify quarterly Catch-Up Days that would allow students time to complete assignments they might be missing or need to complete. The Catch-Up Days for this quarter will be December 10th and December 11th. Students will follow their schedule and log into Blackboard Collaborate. Teachers will take attendance and remind students about any work they need to complete; no new lessons or additional assignments will occur on these days.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend. As always, please feel free to reach out to me or a member of the admin team.

Daily Health Screening Requirement

daily health screening, using Covid-19 Health Screening Questions, will be required for all students prior to coming onto school grounds (this applies for Material Distribution Days, in-person instruction, and co-curricular/extra-curricular activities). The health screening tool is available in EnglishAmharicArabicChineseFarsiKoreanSpanishUrdu and Vietnamese.

As indicated in the Parent/Guardian Health Screening Commitment form, parent/guardians, will complete the health screening each morning, prior to sending the student to school. In order to reduce the spread of communicable disease to student and staff, it is critical that parents/guardians accurately complete this screening daily and keep students home from school when exhibiting any symptoms. These health screenings will be done on an honor basis and will not be required to be submitted to the school.

Parents or guardians will be required to make this commitment for all school-aged children in their household.

The Future of College Admissions

Langley High School's PTSA is pleased to invite your high school to participate in our upcoming free live webinar, "The Future of College Admissions," presented by Jeff Selingo, best-selling author, engaging speaker, and college admissions expert, on Tuesday, December 8, at 7 pm.

Mr. Selingo immersed himself in the world of college admissions for a year to answer a question on the minds of many high school students and parents alike: How do colleges select their freshman class? The result is his latest book, a New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice, Who Gets In and Why: A Year Inside College Admissions

In his presentation, Mr. Selingo will dispel entrenched notions of how to compete and win at the college admissions game, reveal why families have much to gain by broadening their notion of what qualifies as a “good college," and explain how the pandemic is impacting college admissions. The session will wrap up with a Q&A.

Participants may register by clicking on this link: The Future of College Admissions. To submit questions for the webinar in advance, click here

Warmline Available to All Virginians Struggling to Cope

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused upheaval and unexpected stress in the lives of so many people. To support Virginians, the VA C.O.P.E.S. (compassionate, optimistic, person-centered, empowering support) warmline is available to offer support. The mental health tip line started in May 2020 and, thanks to new funding, the service will be extended through May 2021.

Any Virginian can make a confidential call and speak to a crisis counselor about what's bothering them. The line is available Monday-Friday 9am-9pm and 5pm-9pm on the weekends by phone or text at 877-349-6428. Spanish counselors are also available.

The warmline is available to residents who may be struggling to cope with the effects of the pandemic including isolation, fear, grief, and anxiety. Not only will callers be provided a supportive compassionate ear, but they will also be provided additional information, resources, and referrals as needed.

Note: VA Copes is not a suicide hotline. If in crisis call 800-273-8255 for the National Crisis Hotline, or 911.

IT Reminders

As a reminder, should your student experience any problems with FCPS issued equipment (including the power cord) or software, please use the link below to place a service request with our IT department. All service requests are handled in the order of which they are received and may take up to 48 hours before you are contacted. Our IT department will contact you by either a phone call to troubleshoot or an email response with instructions sent to the email you used when the original ticket was created. In the event that our IT department determines that equipment does need to be replaced, they will give you instructions on the process and assist you further.
