Stenwood Hive Happenings

Hive Happenings Newsletter

Dear Stenwood Families,

Thank you for your continued support of Stenwood as FCPS navigates the phase in timeline changes due to changing health metrics in Fairfax County.  The school metrics from the Virginia Department of Health can be located here (make sure you change the locality to Fairfax).  This School Board Meeting slidedeck that we linked last week shows on slide 15 how FCPS is making decisions related to cohorts phasing in (and remaining) in person.  With the pause of phasing in our Kindergarten group, we will remain in our previous virtual schedule across all grade levels, including daily grade level lunch bunches, until the phase in of our Kindergarten students occurs.

Please note the special enrichment activity posted in our All Students Schoology Course:

“Rethinking Thanksgiving: History, Holidays, and Gratitude”

Want to talk about it?  You can also join Ms. Herendeen and Ms. Cole for a discussion and view clips from authors Kate Messner and Traci McClellan-Sorell as they debunk traditional perceptions about Native Americans, Pilgrims, and the first Thanksgiving.  Kate Messner is the author of “History Smashers: Mayflower” which deals with the real, documented history of that time period and Traci McClellan-Sorell is the author of “We Are Grateful: Otsaliheliga” which shares and celebrates Cherokee traditions of gratitude. Join them as they provide a more inclusive view of the myth of the “First Thanksgiving.”  All are welcome, students didn’t have to watch the webinar last week to participate.

Join us LIVE on Monday for our second virtual assembly:

Virtual MadScience Assembly: Monday, Nov 23rd at 1:30pm

Reminder: Referral Window for AAP Level IV Full-Time Services Screening Consideration Ends 12/1

Tuesday, December 1 is the close of the window (Sept 8-Dec 1) for parents to submit a referral form for their student to be screened for full-time Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) Level IV. The parent referral form, submitted to the school, is one pathway to have a student screened for AAP Level IV. Parents should not wait for an announcement of the second grade screening pool if they want to make sure their student is screened for AAP Level IV in the coming cycle. Parents of students in grades 2-6 will need to submit the referral form via email to Mrs. Riley (esriley@fcps.edu) and Mrs. Herendeen (ppherendeen@fcps.edu) by December 1, 2020.

Referrals will not be accepted after December 1. For more information about AAP Level IV or the screening process, please visit https://www.fcps.edu/academics/academic-overview/advanced-academic-programs.

Optional documents that may also be submitted via email (PDF, JPG, PNG files work best) include:

  • Parent/Guardian Questionnaire – include specific examples of behaviors at home
  • 1-4 pages, single-sided of work samples showing critical & creative thinking and/or advanced academic potential

Questions you might enjoy talking about:

  • What are the easiest things to be grateful for? What are the most difficult?
