Coates Families,
I hope you’re having a good week! At school, we persevere (and we could not do it without you!). We have lots of important announcements this week. Before we get into those, a few thank you’ s:
- Thanks to PTA and Chipotle for sponsoring our family spirit night this week. If you bought dinner at Chipotle, you raised funds for our school!
- Thanks to Heritage Fellowship Church for once again donating generous bundles of fresh food for our families in need.
- Thanks to our kindergarten parents, kids, and staff for a successful transition to new classes and their flexibility when the plan for in-person school got put on pause!
We hope that everyone has a happy and safe Thanksgiving next week. Watch for an upcoming email with information on how you can express appreciate for your child’s teacher!
Tuesday, December 1 is the close of the window (Sept 8-Dec 1) for parents to submit a referral form for their student to be screened for full-time Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) Level IV. The parent referral form, submitted to the school, is one pathway to have a student screened for AAP Level IV. Parents should not wait for an announcement of the second grade screening pool if they want to make sure their student is screened for AAP Level IV in the coming cycle. Parents of students in grades 2-7 will need to submit the referral form by December 1.
Referrals will not be accepted after December 1. For more information about AAP Level IV or the screening process, please visit https://www.fcps.edu/academics/academic-overview/advanced-academic-programs.
If you have any questions, please write to our Advanced Academic Resource Teacher, Ms. Mani, at jtmani@fcps.edu.
All students may check out books online and pick up at school. Our office is open M-F from 8:30-4. Here's how:

The Fairfax County School Board has voted to make Inauguration Day–Wednesday, January 20, 2021–a holiday for FCPS students and employees, and Juneteenth–June 19, 2021–a holiday for employees that will be observed on Friday, June 18, 2021. Read the news release
FCPS has launched a COVID-19 dashboard to share weekly COVID-19 cases that have been self-reported to us. Data is updated weekly on Friday by 1 p.m. Any cases occurring after that time are reported for the following week.
This data should be interpreted with caution as it only reflects cases that have been shared with FCPS through self-reporting and may not be aligned to future epidemiological investigations. This data is currently being shared from a division level, as opposed to school or work site, so that it does not jeopardize sharing personally identifiable, confidential health information involving FCPS students and staff. Case reports indicate the total number of COVID-19 cases self-reported to principals, administrators, and program managers. Reports were shared with the Fairfax County Health Department to initiate contact tracing.
Effective November 2, the FCPS COVID-19 dashboard will be disaggregated and will present case data by school and case type (student, staff, visitor) and data will be updated daily.
Updated information is available on the FCPS website.
The FCPS Family Guide for Return to School has a wealth of information on topics like concurrent instruction, lunch, the mandatory mask policy, recess, laptops, health protocols, and more.
