Important Advanced Academics Information

Reminder:  Referral Window for Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) Level IV Screening Consideration Ends December 1

Tuesday, December 1 is the close of the window (Sept 8-Dec 1) for parents to submit a referral form for their student to be screened for full-time Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) Level IV. The parent referral form, submitted to the school, is one pathway to have a student screened for AAP Level IV. Parents should not wait for an announcement of the second grade screening pool if they want to make sure their student is screened for AAP Level IV in the coming cycle. Parents of students in grades 2-7 will need to submit the referral form by December 1.

Referrals will not be accepted after December 1. For more information about AAP Level IV or the screening process, please visit https://www.fcps.edu/academics/academic-overview/advanced-academic-programs or contact our Advanced Academics Resource Teacher, Raechel Acosta, at rbacosta@fcps.edu.

Counselor's Corner

An image with the words "I am Grateful for" surrounded by spiraling words of positive things.

Can showing Gratitude be good for your health?

We often reflect on what we are grateful for at Thanksgiving time. Why not practice gratitude all year long? Here are some reasons why:

Research suggests that gratitude may be associated with:

  • better physical and mental health
  • increased happiness and life satisfaction
  • decreased materialism

When you recall and reflect on a happy memory, the same chemical is released in your brain that is released when you were in the actual moment.

Some ideas to consider:

  • Have members of your family keep a personal gratitude journal- jotting down a brief note about what they are grateful for in the moment or at a specific time daily or weekly.
  • Have a family gratitude journal that is shared with all members
  • Have a gratitude jar. Family members write down things they are grateful for on a small piece of paper and put it in the jar.
  • Read the items in the journal or jar periodically or when someone needs a boost.
  • Encourage children to think beyond “family, food and shelter.” Watch Kid President in this video as he talks about feeling grateful for the small stuff.
  • Create a gratitude picture (see sun picture) and display it as a reminder.
  • Have a gratitude moment during dinner or at bedtime. You and your child can share what you are grateful for.
  • Encourage your child to write letters of gratitude to friends, family members or anyone they feel grateful for.
  •  Express gratitude and show appreciation. Say “thank you” more often within the family and as you go about your routine outside of the home.
A smiling heart says, "Your Counselor Cares About You!"
