Principal Message

Good Afternoon,

In the last several hours more change has come.  To a degree this is the time we are living in.  Some level of uncertainty exists each day on a lot of fronts.  Although this is not easy, it is where we are.  At MRES we have come to view these times as an ocean, there is still beauty but there are also times when the tides shift suddenly, the sands beneath our feet are less stable and walkable, and the waves crash in.  We don’t control the ocean so our options are: run away (not a good options for our students and their families), stay in the ocean and get knocked down by the waves while swallowing mouthfuls of salt water (not a good option for anyone) or riding the waves as they come (realistically, our collective “best” option).  So as the waves of change come we are choosing to surf the seas of  uncertainty as best we can, providing information to you in as timely of a fashion as we can, and attempting to model rolling with the tides.  One of our Positivity Project attributes is perspective taking.  No doubt these times right now are hard, but harder still for some more than others.  By taking the perspective of meeting each wave as something we can react to with agility, we put our best foot forward and strive for a positive attitude as we meet life’s challenges.  Surfs up MRES!  Thank you for riding with us and for showing your own moves for riding the waves.

Get Fit and Find It: Photo Scavenger Hunt!

Join the Marshall Road Elementary PTA and our amazing PE teachers, Mr. Clancy and Mr. Robeson, for a photo scavenger hunt to explore our community and get fit! Throughout the month of November, a Vienna ‘Fit Spot’ will be announced via our Facebook page for our kids and families to visit.  This activity promotes healthy living while having fun! Link

Book Fair is open!

Local business Bards Alley will be hosting our fall book fair and it will align with our "Positivity in Action" initiative. Here is a  link  to a video that explains this year’s book fair.  Please use this link to order through November 30.

Books will be available for free pickup at MRES on Monday December 14th no matter what the site says! (Their site will tell you end of December or early January and that’s not true!) Or you may choose to have them shipped elsewhere.

Please use this opportunity to help support Marshall Road by purchasing electronic gift cards for your teachers to use in classroom supplies!  This is in lieu of the "wish lists" we have done in the past.  Funds raised through this event will go right back into our community, to ensure that all food insecure students get the opportunity to receive a book, and to help the MRES library grow!  Thank you for your support!

Thanksgiving Food Drive

Please support our Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive for those in need.  Once again, we will be supporting Food for Others, but this year it will be a virtual event.  Please visit Food for Others’ Amazon Wish Lists anytime in November to help in the fight against hunger in our community. Food for Others’ Amazon Wish Lists can be found here.

For more information about Food for Others please visit: https://www.foodforothers.org/.

To donate physical items, please drop off either today before 4:30 p.m. or all day Friday in front of MRES, to benefit the Committee for Helping Others (CHO).

Annual Winter Coat Drive

New and gently used winter coats, gloves, hats, and scarves will be collected to help children and adults in our area.  Details coming soon.

Learning Highlight

This week we would like to spotlight the work of our 5th grade students.

In Social Studies students are learning about the geography of Ancient China and how it impacts the way that people lived and changed.  Below are some examples of student thinking using a virtual “chalk talk”.  They made connections, had great discussions, and came to conclusions about how geography impacts culture.

Chalk Talk

In reading students are learning about what a theme is and are using learning progressions to help think deeply about various themes.  They watched the Disney Short Piper to explore some different themes and wrote about them on Jamboard!
