Return to School Information

Parents, we are pleased to inform the community that we were able to honor all parent requests for returning to school.  Mr. Cook and I have been collaborating with teachers to prepare the final details for our return to school plans and wanted to provide you with a timeline of when to expect these details.

Parents should expect an email from the school detailing our return to school plans according to the schedule shown below:

  • Grade 1-2 Parents: Sometime on or before Friday, November 20
  • Grade 3-6 Parents: Sometime on or before Friday, December 11

These emails will contain the following details related to our return to school plans for your child:

  • Confirmation of instruction preference (virtual / in-person)
  • Confirmation of your child’s teacher
  • For in-person students – confirmation of the days of the week your child will attend school (Tuesday/Wednesday or Thursday/Friday)

Pumpkin Pie with Principals- Thursday, November 19 @ 6:30 pm

Please join us on Thursday, November 19 for Pumpkin Pie with Principals.  Mr. Cook and I will be showing students how to make pumpkin pie!  Following the pumpkin pie event we will transition straight into the PTA meeting.

If you want to join along with us, we will be using the Libby's Pumpkin pie recipe shown on the back of the can.  To help make the recipe more simple for younger friends, we will be using store purchased pie crust. The meeting link and details will be sent via e-Notify email.

Here's the recipe link to Libby's Pumpkin Pie: Libby's Pumpkin Pie Recipe

2. Extra Planning Days for Kindergarten Teachers

Kindergarten Parents, in order to prepare for the transition to concurrent instruction, FCPS recently decided to provide additional planning days for Kindergarten teachers. As such, Kindergarten students will not have synchronous instruction on the following days:

  • Thursday, November 12
  • Friday, November 13

3. Kiss N Ride Registration for 2020-2021

We will continue to utilize our Kiss N Ride drop-off and pick-up system this school year. Our goal is for students to arrive and dismiss quickly and safely. If your family plans to use Kiss N Ride this year, even if it’s infrequently, we ask that you complete a digital form. Upon completion of the form, families will be sent a Kiss N Ride number to display in cars at dismissal. Due to changes in safety protocols, we will not permit students into the building prior to 9:05am, the time of the first bell. As such, we won’t begin our Kiss N Ride until 9:05.

4. News from Advanced Academics

To initiate the screening process for students currently in grades 2-6, you will need to submit a Level IV referral form to Sara Balcanoff at sebalcanoff@fcps.edu by the deadline. No exceptions can be made to this deadline. Level IV referral forms can be found at: https://www.fcps.edu/sites/default/files/media/forms/AAPLevelIVReferralForm_1.pdf.

6. To Our Active Duty Soldiers and Veterans

Veterans Day

For those who took the time to submit read alouds for our students, or virtually came in to our classrooms to speak with our children, we say THANK YOU for this and everything you do for our country. We salute you and appreciate all your sacrifices.

Show Your Support

Want to honor and support our men and women in the armed forces but don't quite know how?  Contribute to the GBW donation drive.

GBW is holding a donation drive for our soldiers who are stationed overseas. We would like to collect small travel size hygiene products (i.e. shaving cream, disposable razors, shampoo and conditioner, soap and hand warmers). I will be sending the items to our soldiers at the end of the month. Items can be dropped off at door 8 during library book curbside pick-up/drop off times: Mondays from 8:00 – 11:00am, and 2:00 – 4:00 pm. The last Monday for collection will be Monday, November 30.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact Katie Musitani at kmbelyeamusi@fcps.edu.

Thank you for all your help and support.

9. Positivity Project For Families

Next week’s Positivity Project trait of the week is GRATITUDE! Feel free to check out the quote, video, and 3 questions found in this link to explore gratitude with your child.

10. “Go Paperless” Progress Report Option Now Available

The “Go Paperless” option is now available to all ES parents to allow them to only receive online progress reports starting the first quarter of SY 20/21. This will not impact any other mailings from FCPS other than the progress reports for ES students and report cards for secondary students. To take advantage of the paperless options, parents and/or guardians will need to log into ParentVUE, then go to “My Account” and select "Go Paperless". All parents and/or guardians who live with the student and share the same address must have a SIS ParentVUE account and must select the paperless option to prevent mailing of the printed progress reports. The “Go Paperless” option will apply to all their associated students, no matter what school level. If the associated parent and/or guardian has already selected “Go Paperless” for their secondary student, the option will now apply to any ES siblings as well.

We Can't "Mask" our Gratitude

As we reflect on 2020 let’s not forget the impact that our wonderful GBW teachers and specialists have had on each of our families this year. We are asking that each student take time to let their teachers and specialists know how thankful we are for them.

Students can get as creative as they would like, a few examples would be: an email, a handwritten note, or a thankful hand turkey. If you choose a handwritten item you can either take a picture of it and email it directly to your teacher/specialist, or if you would like to send it via snail mail you can send it directly to the school (13300 Poplar Tree Rd, Fairfax, VA 22033) to your teacher(s) attention.

Lastly, once the item has been completed, if you would like your child's note shared in a slideshow for the November PTA meeting, please email us a copy of their work no later than 11/18 to greenbriarwestpta@gmail.com

2020-21 GBW Yearbook Pictures Wanted!

Even though GBW Pandas are not inside the classrooms, the GBW Yearbook Committee wants to document all the learning taking place at home!

Send your pictures (e.g., at home virtual learning activities and Chick-Fil-A Spirit Night) to gbwpandayearbook@yahoo.com.  Be sure to include the student’s name, grade, and teacher name in the email.
