Weekly News From South County High School

From The Principal

Family,

I am hoping that each of you has had a good week.  I have to say that as we inch closer and closer to students returning to school, I have just gotten more and more anxious.  Not about pandemic stuff.  But more so about just being able to provide the experience that they want and need to have as young people in our building.  I have been wondering about what that first day will be like and how anxious they will be entering the building.  We are excited about what can be as we continue to prepare by working through logistics in the classrooms, getting input from both our students and teachers, and then trying to provide both groups with those things they believe will enhance our upcoming reunion.  I fully expect that when the time comes, we will be able to handle the needs of our students and teachers and make this experience work in the end.

I have been asked by our Technology Support Specialist to share the following information:

If a student has a laptop that does not show the correct time after Daylight Savings Time started. Please head to ANY FCPS school (doesn’t need to be South County HS) and restart your laptop a minimum of 3 times. The reason your laptop may not have automatically updated the time is because it has been off the school network for some time and needs updates sent from the network.

Due to the fact that we have some teachers who will not be returning to the school because of health related issues, we are looking to hire hourly-paid classroom monitors that will have the responsibility of monitoring classrooms where the teacher of that course is actually teaching the class from home on a Tuesday – Friday schedule.  If you would like more information about the position, please review the job description and qualifications online and apply if interested. Please feel free to share information about this opportunity with anyone else you think may be interested.  What better way to spend more time with your child; or to get away from them.

I am hoping that all of you have been able to take the time to complete the selection process for virtual or in-person learning.  The window allowing for changes closed on Friday.  If you made no selection at all either in July or during this recent resurvey period, you have been opted into to in-person learning.  From this point going forward, we will be making staffing and scheduling decisions based off of the data that we have received.  I thank you for your time and patience with this process.

On November 11th we will be celebrating our Veterans with an outdoor ceremony at 7:00am (Yeah I know). This annual event has been touching every year and I trust that this years will be the same.  I hope that those of you who have served will be able to make it out to share in honoring yourselves and others who have placed duty and country over self for the sake of the rest of us!  Here is a short blurb from one of our organizers:

The South County PTSO Military Connections and the Military Connected Youth organizations will host a Veterans Day Recognition on Wednesday, November 11th at 7:00 AM.  If you are interested in attending the Veterans Day Recognition or if your child is looking to connect with other military connected youth at South County High School, please respond to schsmilitaryconnections@gmail.com.

On November 11th, we will have a 2-hour early release.  This is will be a synchronous day for students.  However, we will not have our CAT B students in the building on this day.  The schedule for the day will be:

Period

   Time

2

   8:10 - 9:20

6

   9:35 - 10:45

Lunch

   11:00 - 11:30

8

   11:45 - 12:55

Dismissal

   12:55

Once again I would like to thank each of you for your continued support and flexibility during this time.  We will continue to work to improve on what we are doing with our students to make this experience the best it can be.  I wish you all a safe and relaxing rest of the weekend.  Until we chat again, please take care and know that we are #OneStallion

Gary

From the Activities Office

Beginning Monday, November 2, FCPS activities and athletic programs will transition to a new online student registration system.  This new system offers a host of benefits for schools and community members including:

  • One stop shop for registering your student for athletic programs and many common activities occurring throughout the school year
  • Electronic submission of the emergency care card and weight room waiver- only have to fill these out once!
  • A new home for the state-mandated concussion education program

Each family will create an account, and from this account, can register their student(s) for various activity and athletic opportunities.  While registering does not guarantee a spot on the team, this information will help to ensure your student is ready to go on the first day of tryouts.  Students can be registered for one or more activities throughout the year and families can sign in as needed to update information.

 Please note the following:

  • You will still need to submit a valid VHSL Pre-participation Exam Form (physical) directly to the school prior to your student’s participation; all other requirements will be completed through this registration process.
  • Families who have already submitted their concussion education verification form will be asked to verify completion again as part of the registration process.  We do apologize for any inconvenience- please bear with us as we make this change

The new registration site is available here:

"Paperless" Report Cards

Help save trees and FCPS $$ on postage by opting in to receive “Paperless” Report Cards (that can be printed through ParentVUE)

Parents/Guardians may opt into “Go Paperless” for report cards by following the below instructions:

  • Parents/Guardians can take advantage of the paperless option, by logging into ParentVUE, then going to “My Account” and selecting "Go Paperless!". This is the only way to keep a paper report card from being generated for students at the secondary level. All parents who share the same address as the student must have a SIS ParentVUE account and must select the paperless option.

Yearbook Info and Links for Seniors

Senior Quotes

The yearbook is now collecting senior quotes. These quotes are run

under seniors’ pictures in the yearbook as a way to share one’s

personality. They are due on December 1. No late quotes will be

accepted.

A few things to consider:

  • Students can only submit ONE TIME, so please be thoughtful of

what you submit. You can not change it once it is in.

  • If there is a quote that the editorial board deems inappropriate,

if it uses bad language, or if it is questionable, the editors will

pull it.

  • Lastly, the yearbook does not print websites or time stamps in

videos- so students who choose that, will not have a quote

printed.

  • If you have any questions, please email Jennifer Delinski at

jldelinski@fcps.edu

All quotes should be submitted through the link below, which is

attached to your student ID

https://forms.gle/wmGZcHp8xYBS1XNy7

Senior Photos

make-up sessions in late November/early December. Specific

details and notifications for those dates will be communicated

in mid-November. Further questions? Contact Lifetouch

Customer Service team at 800-445-1189.

Stallion Spirit Store (Kiosk) goes Virtual!

South County’s Stallion Spirit Store is back and now open virtually! Items are available to order online through a Google Form with invoicing to follow after order is fulfilled. All items can be shipped directly to your home for a fee or pick up can be arranged at the school. To order items, please use this link - Stallion Spirit Store.

Visit our website and please consider giving us feedback on new merchandise options!

Thank you in advance for supporting the Entrepreneurship & Marketing program as well as the Work and Transition program here at South County. The students from these programs typically work the Spirit Kiosk at lunches to build customer service skills as well as count inventory and review financial records. These work-based learning opportunities allow students to connect classroom lessons to actual scenarios. This year, the students will still review the financial records and inventory while virtual as well as create promotions and research new merchandise options.

Support the SCHS Class of 2021 by making a purchase at the Lorton Holiday Extravaganza & Craft Show Online MarketPlace!

We know the online MarketPlace will not take the place of our beloved Lorton Holiday Extravaganza & Craft Show with Santa, our student helpers, the Band's amazing Silent Auction, the Swim Team’s Candy Cane Fun Run, the Crew Team’s Santa’s Book Emporium and the more than 2,300 shoppers (our record last year!) but we've got all your favorite vendors back for some great online holiday shopping.

Please support these local businesses as you do your holiday shopping! We need all Stallion families to share the online MarketPlace with friends and neighbors. Please retweet and share our social media posts. We will be adding new items every day! The shop is open now through Nov 30! Go to Lorton Holiday Extravaganza and Craft Show on Facebook.
