Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day

Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day

November 18, 2020

Celebrate with Walking Wednesdays

Ruby Bridges

Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day (RBWTSD) is a great way for students to honor the courage of Ruby and the advancement of civil rights.  Her simple, but courageous act of showing up for school each day, played an important part in the Civil Rights Movement.

On November 14, 1960 Ruby Bridges was the first African American student to integrate the all-white William Frantz Elementary School in New Orleans.  She was escorted to school by Federal Marshals.  She was the only student in her class taught by a white teacher named Barbara Henry.  To learn more, you can read The Story of Ruby Bridges by Robert Coles.

A group of 5th graders in San Francisco learning about Ruby Bridges decided she needed a special day and have taken RBWTSD nationwide in 2020.  FCPS will be participating on November 18, 2020.  For more information contact Saferoutestoschool@fcps.edu

parent survey

The Virginia Safe Routes to School Parent/Caregiver Survey deadline has been extended.  If you have a student, please take a few minutes to fill out the survey.  The survey helps determine programing for the Safe Routes to School program and will help inform us on how the pandemic has influenced walking and biking in your area.
