The Mustang Newsletter

Dear SCMS Community-

We made it! One quarter down and three to go. I want to congratulate the students, staff and community on successfully completing the 1st quarter of the most unique school year ever! I continue to be inspired by the flexibility and GRIT exhibited by all Mustangs daily, especially the faculty. Please consider nominating one or more of our marvelous mustangs for an employee recognition award (details included in this communication).

As the first quarter draws to a close, I also wanted to remind you that SCMS adopted a rolling gradebook for this year. The rolling grade has many benefits, and I encourage you to re-familiarize yourself with the concept by reading about it HERE.

Lastly, I want to thank the families who attended the Return to School Town Hall on Wednesday evening. If you were unable to attend, or want to listen again, you can access the recording and presentation HERE. We are busily planning for the return on students to our hallways. We welcomed back 4 students the week of 10/23 and can’t wait to welcome back more.

We will honor the choice you made in the FCPS July survey to determine the setting for instruction. If you chose in-person instruction, we will assume your student(s) will return to in-person instruction. If you chose all-virtual instruction, we will assume you will continue in that format. If your circumstances have changed, please email Ms. Sherri Perper (slperper@fcps.edu) no later than Friday, November 6, 2020 to indicate your change in preference. There is no need to communicate if your decision will remain consistent with July's survey.

We will strive to minimize the impact of this transition; however, students may experience a change in schedule or class assignment as we work to accommodate preferences.

Thank you for your support and partnership as we continue on this journey to deliver the best instruction for all FCPS students.

Sincerely,

Peter Kownacki Principal @pakownacki

Parents and/or guardians can opt to “Go Paperless” at any time by logging into ParentVue, going into “My Account” and selecting “Go Paperless”. You will need to do this before November 6th to make sure you do not receive a printed copy of the first quarter report card. All parents who live with the student and share the same address must have a SIS ParentVue account and must select the paperless option to prevent the mailing of the report cards.

career fair

Looking for Volunteers for a Virtual Career Fair

On behalf of the students and staff at South County Middle School (SCMS), we cordially invite you to our annual Career Day! Although virtual, we will still host this event. Please fill out the link if you’re interest in displaying your career via video and PowerPoint. https://forms.gle/KWtnwywpUuRrTn76A

SCMS Career Day is designed to expose our students to the world of work. We have invited a wide-range of professionals to share their educational background, skills needed for their profession, and professional duties/experiences.  This year’s Career Fair will be a virtual event held through our Google Site.

We are asking that volunteers submit a video and supplemental age appropriate information for students to view. You’re welcome to take videos of your worksite, samples of materials used, and/or daily activities. In the past we've had presenters bring robotics, career related equipment from their career, STEM related puzzles, etc. These are a few examples of things you can show via your video.

Our Career Day would not be possible without your participation. If you have questions on how to submit your video, contact Maggie Spingler at mmspingler@fcps.edu or Zakiyya Brodie zbrodie@fcps.edu. The deadline to submit your video is Tuesday, December 1, 2020. Our hope is to engage students in career and post-secondary exploration.
