students, students, students...in-person classroom pictures, week of 10/26th
Dear Family Fairfax,
Please take a moment to thank a staff member: Good Gobble 2020: https://forms.gle/eD8gphNbbdfRaWdE6
What a week! As you can see from the collage above, we welcomed many students back in the building and continued preparing for our pilot next week. We are very excited to welcome our students back into Fairfax, socially-distanced of course, and uncover what lessons need to be learned to do live, in-person, school in the middle of a pandemic. We still have a long way to go to be fully ready to operationalize in-person school, but we are excited for the start.
As many of you read in Dr. Brabrand’s email, we are all concerned about the enormous workload for students and staff. The pressure to “cover” all content is very real, and with significantly shorter instructional time, everyone is feeling the pressure. We will work as a staff in the coming weeks to engage the conversation around how to ease some of the burden we are all feeling around workload and make it more manageable for everyone. This will pass, and it is only temporary, so the adjustments we make now aren’t forever. We just have to keep telling ourselves that.
In our conversations, we will process the current workload of our students, but with the guideline that all late work be given until Monday, November 2nd at 5PM to be submitted, this will create a workload issue for many students this weekend. Some students will want to make up many assignments, and this could lead to many hours of additional “homework” over the coming days. In full transparency, I wanted to make you aware of that.
Living in this virtual world has created an email overload for students and staff alike. Hundreds to thousands of emails a day, and with our only communication being virtual, it has created a never ending cycle of composing and replying. We miss the human interaction and the ease of being able to ask quick questions and provide quick responses. As a rule, please allow teachers up to 48 business hours to respond to email and administrators up to 24 business hours to respond. Though we try to be as responsive as possible, the sheer volume of electronic communication is insurmountable at times. To boot, many of the solutions to questions that are coming to our inboxes require several additional emails to other staff members in order to adequately respond since we aren’t seeing each other in person. This adds to a lag in our response time as well. Thank you for your patience on this.
With the yucky weather, we are saddened to have had to cancel our senior event, but we are looking forward to rescheduling it in a few weeks! It will be awesome to celebrate the Class of 2021!
Our annual Outstanding Employee Awards have begun. Please see the announcement below to nominate a staff member to be recognized.
Don’t forget to fall back this weekend!
Erin

To take advantage of the paperless options, BOTH parents and/or guardians will need to log into ParentVUE, then go to “My Account” and select "Go Paperless." All parents who live with the student and share the same address must have a SIS ParentVUE account and must select the paperless option to prevent mailing of the printed report cards.

Technology Support
The FCPS Technology Resource page provides tip sheets and support in multiple languages. These tip sheets provide answers to basic questions about FCPS technologies. Often you can find the answer to your question in these resources. For technical support questions about your online parent accounts, your student’s FCPS laptop, or technology your student uses for online learning, contact the Parent Technology Help Desk (toll free) at 833-921-3277 or enter a support request ticket via the Parent and Student IT Portal.
The Parent Technology Help Desk will be answered 7 a.m.-11 p.m., seven days a week. Parents who need help in a language other than English should let help desk staff know, and an interpreter will join them on the line. (FCPS has Parent Information Phone Lines available in eight languages to assist with general questions about FCPS.)
NOVA OFFERING SELECT COURSES TO FCPS SENIORS
This fall, Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) will offer select college courses at a third of the cost to Fairfax County high school seniors. Courses are eight weeks in length and will begin October 20. Students must meet placement requirements and understand there may be textbooks or other material fees associated with courses. Since these classes are all online, classes will not meet in real time. Students will need access to a computer and the internet.
The online courses are not intended to replace any 2020-21 classes for which students are already registered at their high school. The program provides an accelerated opportunity to earn transferable, college-only credits.
Details about the Online Early College Program are available online.
